I like how he mentioned defining roles and consistent playing time, which apparently is a controversial concept for a Kings coach

I worked for coaches that have set substitution patterns: this minute this player has to come out. I think every game takes its only personality: one night if a player may have a go offensively, you gotta ride him. A player may get in early foul trouble, you have to get him out of the game. You have your starting five and then you have guys who come in

You also have to understand who plays best with what unit, who, you know, is compatible with another guy, cause not everybody compliments the other player, so you gotta get the right mix there, but every game will take on its own personality that will dictate those minutes,

but it's really important, you have to as a head coach establish roles, and I know, players get very frustrated if one game they play 25 minutes, the next game they play 5 minutes so I think having consistency, so players have better understanding of what's expected of them

The offense in Cleveland was pretty bad. Hopefully he gets an assistant that can help with offensive sets. I don't really expect him to be a coach for the offense though, so the issues in Cleveland aren't a big deal.

The part I liked most was that he realised guys won't want to work as hard defensively if they aren't touching the ball on offense, and this is especially true on a bad team that doesn't win much. Fans are always demanding that certain players be giving it their all on defense even when they are iced on the offensive end. It just doesn't work that way on a young team, and I'm glad we finally have a coach who will hopefully do something to ensure that guys are continuously involved on both ends of the court.

well, to be fair, it's not like that cleveland team was stacked with gifted offensive talent outside of lebron. and it should also be noted that, as a head coach, mike brown is notoriously lacking in creativity on the offensive side of the ball. from what i understand, mike malone had greater influence on the offensive side of the ball in golden state. it's been well-chronicled how he turned their defense around, but the warriors are also stacked, offensively speaking, and malone seemed able to harness that talent to great effect in their sets. that said, every head coach needs a quality staff, so i agree that he should look for help wherever he needs it...

I am not on the Malone bandwagon until he puts his words in play on the floor. If the players respond and play consistently better then I will, but since I don't know enough about Malone I will reserve judgment.

As for what I expect? I expect the team to be better. If it's not then it might be time to trade some players.

We'll definitely see more zone on defense, if the situation calls for it. Malone put in an effective 1-2-2 against teams that struggle from the 3pt line. Not sure how good of a defender Klay Thompson was coming into the NBA, but he improved immensely under two years with Malone being a big part of his improvement.

Overall, I'm really liking the hire and his vision for the future.

it's already time to trade some players. the kings are overloaded with ball dominant chuckers at the guard positions. that must be ironed out. they're lacking depth at SF/PF/C. they don't even really have a true starting SF. draft and free agency may net some valuable, complementary assets, but you have to subtract, as well, if you want to build a balanced roster. guys like toney douglas and cole aldrich likely have value as role players to a defensive-minded coach like mike malone, so they could be retained. that means some of the other extraneous parts need to be traded...

of course, it sounds to me like you're driving at the notion that demarcus cousins and/or tyreke evans should be traded in the event that the team does not improve. time will tell on that front, but this offseason is more important, as far as transactions are concerned. the team will improve simply through the prioritizing of defense and the solidifying of roles, but the long term outlook for the kings is dependent upon the building of a more balanced roster. i expect vivek ranadive and co. will begin that process asap...
