Mavs' offense ails, but Christie is better

While the Mavericks' offense continues to struggle for a passing grade, Doug Christie is passing test after test – and it has nothing to do with numbers in a box score.
His numbers were fine in a 99-80 exhibition loss to the Los Angeles Clippers on Sunday at American Airlines Center. He was one of the few bright spots offensively.
But the tests that mattered were a couple of plays on which his ankles had to withstand some odd twists. Neither moment, particularly one with his surgically repaired left ankle in the first quarter, caused a problem, he said.
"It's improving," Christie said. "It kind of [turned] out a little in the first quarter, but we iced it and it feels OK. I just have to keep getting out there. It's been eight or nine months since I played.
"That's the only way I'm going to get back into the flow: to play."
Christie hit six of 10 shots. Marquis Daniels was 6-of-9 from the field. The rest of the Mavericks were 19-of-61 (31.1 percent). Starting forwards Dirk Nowitzki and Josh Howard were 6-of-25 combined. Missing Jerry Stackhouse through the preseason has hampered the offense. Trying to post up Nowitzki more than they will in the regular season also has bogged things down. Considering those factors, it is not yet time to panic.
"Even though it's preseason, we still want to score," coach Avery Johnson said. "We're just in kind of a funky rhythm right now. We know we can score better than this. It's not like we have 10 new guys or that we're playing any differently than we have in the past. Are we alarmed about a preseason game where we had a horrible second half? No. But are we concerned about some of the things that happened out there? Yes."
--Doug is avg 5.2 ppg, 48%fg, 2.8 rebs, 2.2 assists, and just under 1 steal in 20.8 min per game.
