Trade Exceptions

I alway wondered how these trad exceptions are created. Anyone??????
In a nutshell, whenever you trade a player with a higher salary than the one(s) you are receiving, you get a trade exception for the difference. You can use this exception to trade for another player within a year (if the player you're trading for has a higher salary than the allowed 115% + $100K). You cannot use these exceptions for signing free agents, or extending contracts to your own players - they're only useable for trades and expire within 1 year.

There's a lot more complicated rules than what I just posted, but that's it in a nutshell...

Thanks Jose but I kind of already knew what you told me.

I guess, what I am asking is if player X is worth $10 million this year and player Y is worth $6 million this year. Both teams are over the Salary Cap These players cannot be trade straight up because their salaries are not within the range that allowed. Can the team trading player Y for player X "create" a trade exception for some $4 million to make the trade work?????? Or are those trade exceptions only "created" by teams that are under the salary cap??????

Not if both teams are over the salary cap. But if team with player Y ($6M) is at least 4 million below the cap, they can trade for player X ($10M). The team receiving player Y gets a $4M exception that they can use within a year to "make up" for the difference in salaries.

Ok thanks, that clears it up a bit.

Now another question. In this possible Songaila to Chicago trade. We don't want any players in return. Chicago doesn't have a trade exception. For arguments sake, if we trade Songaila to Chicago, Bulls trade Piatkowski to a team under the salary cap (say Charlotte), would then Charlotte "create" a trade exception and give it to us??????

The teams don't really "create" the trade exceptions - they are the result of the CBA rules that require somewhat equal salary exchanges when trades are involved. (In cases that would result in a trade exception, it's typically 100% + $100K).

Your scenario would result in a trade exception for the Kings. If Charlotte was willing to do what you described, then the Kings would get a trade exception equal to whatever salary we sign Songaila for. Not really sure what good it would do the Kings, as they aready have about $4.5M worth of trade exceptions. Also, on single player trades, I'm not sure if the scenario you proposed is allowed. I think the Kings would have to get "something" like a draft pick in order for this to be doable (not really sure about this - I could be wrong).
