The Sacramento Kings

This is not a rant. This is...
Well, I don't know what it is, but it comes from the heart...

In 1998 Yugoslavia were crowned the World Champions. It was big and since my father is Serbian, I celebrated with all my heart.

It was the first time I watched basketball for real. Not just checking the results, but actually watching the games as well. What can I say, I got hooked. After that I watched the European Championships in 1999 and in October of 1999 I watched my first NBA game. Of course I knew about the NBA before, Michael Jordan, the Chicago Bulls and all that. But it was Vlade Divac that made me toon in. And Predrag Stojakovic...
The Sacramento Kings? My guys play there, so why not!
I've been a fan ever since...

I guess I caught the right train, because the Kings were becoming something special. I couldn't see many games, but it was so good. A group of players playing the game the way it's supposed to be played. Like a ****ing TEAM!
Progress was made every year and then there was 2002. I know it's a year that people hate, but let's look at it this way. The Kings made it to the Conference Finals!!!
Man, who am I kidding? We all know what happened in THE GAME. The Kings were leading through the entire thing. Then a Kobe miss, a Shaq miss (maybe in different order) and then there was Horry...
It was just one game, right? [flashback, makes me sick, need another drink]

Some years later everything has changed. Divac is no longer here. Stojakovic is gone. Not only that, the entire team has changed. Where is Webber? Doug and Bobby?
Does this mean I don't have a reason to cheer for this team? Yeah, I can only wish. Unfortunately, I'm stuck with the Kings. There's just something about this team. Don't know what it is...
It makes me suffer, it makes me angry, it makes me happy...I'm still here...

I don't know what made me write this. Maybe I had one beer to many, but I feel this is a time when we have to stick together. Hey people, we made the playoffs so many times in a row, we are spoiled to say the least.
There are fans here that were around when I was still sucking my thumb, and they know what the past years meant. They can see the bigger picture. The rest of us? All we see is a team that isn't winning regularly anymore. Yes, it sucks, but it doesn't mean it's all over.
Patience is the key at this point. Maybe next year, maybe the year after that...
I guess that's what fans were thinking in 1993. And look what happened some years later!

P.S. Please feel free to close this thread, I probably won't remember it in the morning...

Nice topic-glad you are still here with the team as a fan even though almost all of the players are gone. Hopefully it'll get better soon, if not it'll get better eventually(I think). Those Kings were one of the funnest teams to watch EVER.

I love Peja and the Kings , and im pretty sure the kings will never play so fun and pretty like with vlade , doug , webber peja....Somehow i think it is ok now with this-all or nothing deal....They just played so amazing together, so its either not trading anybody or trade them all .....Im huge peja fan, but peja needed really that old kings style of play which the new players dont play...Now kings are more a rough team....At least compared to before

When I heard peja was traded i was angry ...But looking at how kings are doing now and the way peja plays for indiana: It was a good deal!

After Vlade webber and doug left , peja layed the same way as with the old kings, and it just didnt hang together with the new kings style...Artest is much more for this kind of basketball....I think everybody wins on this deal

Everything comes to an end, and I will never forget the way vlade, webber, peja, doug and bibby played together...This basketball was kings basketball, none of the other teams could play that way...Unfortunately we didnt won the championship with that team , but still many good memories

If the average NBA player is in the league for 10 years, then you have to get used to seeing players come and go if you're going to continue to be a fan. It's tough, but it's something you have to get used to...

That's why a lot of us who are long-time fans go by the "It's the name on the front and not the name on the back" mantra. The players may change, but the team remains...

GO KINGS!!!!!

GO KINGS!!!!!

Yep. If I can root for Kleine and Pervis, I can root for our current team, that's for sure! :D

Most of us have our favorite "King's team," just as we have our favorite players. My favorite has changed over the years, so I now have few favorites. Is that technically possibe? Anyway. . . The team at the top of my list is long gone, but I must admit, this team is carving out a nice soft spot in my heart.

Watching players come and go is tough, but you learn to hang in there. My friends, who know my passion for this team, told me recently that I needed to pick a new team to follow since so many players are gone. They just do not get it. It's not about the individual. It's the team.

"Once a King, always a King." I will always follow the careers of players like Webb, Pollard, Williams, Wallace, Peja, and further back. I will be interested even after they are done playing. Richmond, Vlade, and Doug will always be Kings in my mind, but in the end IT IS ALL ABOUT THE TEAM!

Not to derail but the smartass in me has to say this. You mean name in the front "FOR NOW"

And nice post Savo, you do a lot better when I am uti.

Good read. I'm sure all of us feel this way, at least about the team right now. I know I do. But you have to admit, our current situation might not be ideal, but our future is bright. We can only be going up starting now.

Here is Savo just after he wrote this post
