Thank you, David Kahn

Hallama

Starter
Obviously, part of his plan NOT to draft Cousins was because he planned on spending 4/20 on Darko and 3/13 on Pekovic. lol?

Keep up the good work, Kahn.

I guess Rambis sees something in him that makes them think he is worth it, Al Jeff asked for a trade as well. There will be scary and downright laughable contracts given out to out average bummy players I am really glad the Kings are gonna save, there's no need to over pay for anything right now.

I loved this line: Pekovic is a big, 6-foot-11 bruising center who has had an impressive career playing in Greece the past two seasons. Pekovic averaged 14.8 points per game and 3.5 rebounds per game in 23 minutes per game for Panathinikos in Euroleague play last season.

Guess we'll find out more about him this season.

kahn is big dummy as usual. We all hope we can look back and say HA! Minnesota could have had Cousins.

Not only could he have had Cousins, but had him for 4 years and about 8 million less dollars invested. Dark-hole is pretty much what he is, a slow 7 footer that can get you a few blocks a game if he's productive.

For this last draft, it was like having two GMs working to make sure the Kings came out better!

Well I have seen a LOT of Pekovic considering he has played for Partizan for a number of years before going over to Panathanikos and he is a very physical player. His rebounding might be a bit average based on his physical tools but he is probably one of the most physical players in euroleague.

pekovic is a wait-and-see move. maybe overpaid, but probably wouldnt have come over for less.

darko is worse. $4 million per for a bum is pretty bad. probably shouldve paid him no more than 2 (4/8)

That's like saying Nate Robinson is a giant at a midget conference.

Pekovic I think will end up being a bargain for them. Darko's overpaid, but not egregiously. He's stilljust 25 which does't mean much to me development-wise, but he can block shots, rebound and defend. If he can do that solidly for 20-25 minutes per game, that's a good contract.

However, these two contracts are easily the most sensible I've seen signed today. Would you rather have Darko and Pekovic for 33M or Amir Johnson for 5y34m? Drew Gooden for 5y 32M? Channing Frye for 5Y 30m? Rudy Gay for 5y 80M? Joe Johnson for 6y 120M?

If I had to guess, every single one of those contracts will be considered a liability within 3 years. Johnson's could be an absolute albatross.

I tend to agree that those 2 are most reasonable contracts we have seen to date.

Darko signed a 20/4 years (last year partially guaranteed) which is a pretty decent deal for a 25 year old C with his skill set. In 25 minutes he will give you 9/5/1.5 and thats pretty good value. There is potential there for him to get better but if he doesn't, there are definetly MUCH worse contracts out there. For a C who offers genuine shot blocking and defence, that is NOT a big price to pay. I would rather have Darko at $20M/4 years (4th year partially guaranteed) than Frye at $30M/5yrs.

And Pekovic will be a good player in the NBA. Athletic, strong and is NOT afraid to throw his weight around. He is not going to back away from anyone. The kid is a tough bruiser who hasn't played professional basketball for long. 13M/3yrs is NOT a big contract. Especially considering Pekovic would be making that much after tax in Europe. The kid will be a good pick up for T-wolves.

That's like saying Nate Robinson is a giant at a midget conference.

Comes from someone who doesn't know the first thing about european basketball. If you were actually educated about it, you would know that Zeljko Obradovic is one of the best and most successful coaches in europe and a blue print for his team is a physical, bruising centre that will throw his weight around and make his opponent know that they have played a tough physical game. He practically head hunted Pekovic and dropped a massive contract on him to get him from Partizan.

There is a common trend between the most successful coaches in europe, and thats building a team with a physical post presence.

OK I'm going on record to say that I love David Kahn, and not just because the moves he makes often help us. His methods are curious to us yes but he proved to me that he's not the blithering idiot I thought he was when he went on air and gave it to Kenny Smith and David Aldridge. It's very likely his smarts do not translate to the NBA at all so his intellect might not do him any good but I am convinced at this point that he is in possession of a noggin. Plus I like to hear him talk. He's looking to be one of the new characters of the NBA.

Pekovic... Great sign! Believe me...
As I said.
European guys (I mean guys who play in Europe, american players as well) are still so underrated, especially because of their stats.
I remember the other thread where we talked about Rubio's stats with Barcelona Regal.
With a second round pick I'd always pick a guy who plays in Europe.

The problem with Pekovic is going to be the same problem with Jefferson, he's not a long term answer to their frontcourt problems because he can't make up for Love's weaknesses on the defensive end. If I were them, I'd give him big minutes the rest of the year, let him gain some trade value, and try to move him for a defensive center or scoring guard.

Pekovic's limitations in the NBA will be on the defensive end, in terms of lacking that bit of extra step when rotating etc...but offensively he is a load! Its no surprise to anyone that has followed his career that he is playing this well. Once he gets that spot on the low block (and its mostly right under the basket) he is unmovable and he plays within himself. He knows what he is good at and he goes to his strengths. Its probably easier on him in the NBA as there is more space to work in. In Europe teams would pack the paint on him and he would STILL flat our dominate.

But Darko is still averaging about 1 point for every million he earns this year. Pekovic makes a very nice off the bench big man though.

My worry with a guy like Pekovic is that he'll end up like Greg Ostertag: a guy who is valuable if he stays out of foul trouble, but a guy who fouls all the time and needs to rely on the refs to stay in the game.

Still, as long as you don't overpay him, that's fine.

I agree it probably was a big mistake for Kahn not drafting Cousins. It actually looks like anyone who missed drafting Cousins (after Wall) made a big mistake. So it seems like it wasn't only Kahn who made a blunder.

Regarding Kahn spending on Darko and Pekovic, these contracts look good to me. Not too expensive for those kind of players.

BTW, before you ridicule Kahn's moves you might want to check who's team has a better record. Is Petrie's Kings doing better or Kahn's Timberwolves?

As far as I know, Kahn isn't the one actually coaching the Wolves. One thing that does get lost here is that Kevin Love was actually drafted by Kevin McHale. If you suck as long and as bad as the T-Wolves did and wind up with as many draft picks as they did, you're bound to eventually accumulate enough talent to not be as sucky. Let's not forget that even though Kahn drafted Rubio, he also is the nimrod who drafted Jonny Flynn over just about any other player in the draft (Lawson [who he did actually draft only to trade away], Collison, Curry, Marcus Thornton, Brandon Jennings, hell- Jon Brockman has probably had a better NBA career than Flynn to this point) in that year's draft and then drafted Wes Johnson, who to this point has played like a confused Travis Outlaw.

Forgot I even started a thread like this - Kahn obviously made a nice signing with Pekovic. But how good would Minny be IF Kahn had picked Cousins? Darko/Pek/Cousins/Love frontline? Fuggetaboutit...

Kaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahnnnnnnnnnn has built a pretty good team if you ask me

agree with all of that
