Suns vs. Lakers (10/31)

Starter
Suns with 30 points with 4 minutes left in the first quarter. Lakers have 16 (at least they did at the time). I don't think Kobe is playing from review of the box score.

EDIT: Suns shooting over 80% from the floor for the first 8 minutes. No chance that lasts. And since the Suns don't really play defense, Lakers will certainly be back in this game at some point this evening. Will be interesting to see Amare's stats after this game.

Phoenix scored 41 pts in 1st qtr. Whoa!

It is good to see Amare on the floor tonight. He is a very talented young player and I hope he can again make some kind of impact in the league.

Without Kobe, the Lakers roster resembles the Bobcats roster...

EDIT: except for the fact that, shamefully for the Bobcats, Odom is probably much more talented than anyone on the Bobcats' roster.

lamars looking good, ive got him on one of my fantsay teams, and its only the 3rd quarter, and hes laready done a better job "fantsay wise" then any other player who played today...yippe for me, but i still hope the lakers lose, i said that in my startegy at the end....by the way i didnt draft lamar, i would draft an la player, i had it set to auto and he came up, got live with what u get though. go lamar...for the time being

Its amazing, even though they have scored less in the last 25+ mins than they scored in the first quarter and the 13-0 Laker run Phoenix is still putting up a respectable score. But their defense against this Kobe-less Laker squad is really pathetic.

Then again it is opening night.

Wow. Nice 12 minute game by the Suns in the first quarter. I couldn't watch or listen to the game (dammit, nba.com, get some live technical support operators), but apparently no defense was played by the Suns in this game.

Also, 11 minutes for Amare is not what I was hoping to see if that guy is going to be the force that helps the Suns escape the West.

And, apologies to the Lakers for calling their roster equivalent to the Bobcats. Additional props to Mo Evans for taking full advantage of the playing time which Kobe's absence granted him.

Amazing.... And Screamin' A said yesterday morning that these vary Suns will win 2 championships in the next 5 years....... Hes a funny guy I tell ya;)

Much better 2nd qtr for the Lakers. Boo hiss!!! :p

Did you notice they darkened the stands and spotlighted the court like they do at MSG? Looks theatrical. A little extra drama for when the Kings come to town and the Lakers open a can of......soda. ;)

As a matter of fact, Gargy, I did see that. How very theatrical. Yes, it does fit New York and L.A. :p

that was the ugliest game of all time... i dont know what happened to nash after he sat out that first time but damn...

the sad part is, that the lakers didnt even look that good..... odom played well... but no one else on that team was doing anything special.... not one sun tried to contest any shots.... and didnt the lakers have like 70 points in the paint? wow...

and they say that the kings dont rebound the ball....

It is easy to look good when the defese was so so bad...

Bynum looked good, not amazing, but that will come. There is potential there.

All around, I think it had a lot more to do with Mike 'Antoni's system than anything in particular the Lakers did... 1 thing most of the scrubbs on the Lakers can do is shoot, and in the end, they did.

It is the same system that took them to the WCF last year, problem was the lakers squad they played now is better than the one they played then. Andrew Bynum gave them so much problems that they had to double him pretty much every time down the floor, they couldnt leave Vlad Rad open just for the fear of him shooting a 3 and the rest could now actually shoot the ball instead of bricking. Evans and Farmar really brought some great energy and did shoot the ball well.

Mike needs to figure out whether he wants to play small or big and has to live with it, also the lakers had the whole offseason to prepare for this game and their post season experience from last year helped, look at the number of offensive fouls that diaw picked up and how he was insignificant on the team. It was showing up those little things and exposing them that made them lose the game. Phoenix is a good team and Mike is a good coach that he will adjust and correct those things, however we will have to wait and see if the other teams have also picked on a few more weaknesses and start exlpoiting them. If that is the case then Phoenix will not even make the playoffs

Lol...Pardon me, but i had to laugh at that.

Care to explain, or is it just that you laugh at everything. They do have a deep bench imo and would like to know from you how you think different. If you dont know their roster and generally talk then we can leave it there

I'm sorry but they are. whatever reasons you have is probably because you hate the Lakers but hey... we all do but in reality the Lakers depth is deep i'm not sure we can say the samething with the Kings.

The Lakers played well last night, but it's no secret that the Lakers match up incredibly well with the Suns. They have Odom who is one of the few forwards that can keep up with Marion and abuse Marions poor man defense on the other end. They have Kwame (Now Bynum) who can take advantage of their INCREDIBLY small lineup. Luke Walton is tall enough to guard Diaw. Nash's shot was off but still managed to get 15 and 13... Bottom line is the Lakers allowed the Suns to shoot 51%, they were insanely hot and shot 55%. Sounds like the same team as last season if you ask me.

OK, don't be so literal. I think the thing he was laughing about was the Lake(r) and deep word juxtaposition. The Lakers are deep. You know, a deep lake. ;)

I think the difference is that the lakers came up with a plan for the playoffs and is working for them, its is 4-4 from last years playoffs compared to the 0-4 they had in the regular season.

The difference is that they dont run and gun with the suns, they attack the interior every time and dont try to match the suns trey for trey, knowing that they can chip away that lead two points at a time and threes are not the requirement. In that context they look to score in the paint and look for mismatches who ever it could be and that is the reason they shot 55%, i dont think the lakers can match that every night against any other team but I am confident they will repeat that against the suns atleast once again more season.

Every team in the league will have height advantage over the suns cos thats what the suns are, lets see if everyone else is able to do the same, lets see if Brad can take advandtage of that or Reef can take advantage of that, indidually they could but Muss should run a system that will take advantage of that and they should be able to run back every time down the floor on defense as well

Nash was forced many times because of some tight defense, i thought he had the basket everytime he was open, the only person whom I thought was missing open shots was Marion but Barbosa made up for it with his very hot shooting. Raja bell is a scrub who can be hot from three point line but very poor shooter in the mid range, he hit a few threes but struggled in the mid range and thats what the lakers gave him.

Lakers showed lots of different looks to Nash, full court pressure, show of full court pressure to get the ball of Nash's hands and then release to man to man, double team Nash on back court to get the ball of his hands and then man to man, they did lots of those things to keep them off balance. But mainly they scored pretty much every time they posted up and suns never recovered from that, their fast break was gone once the basket was made and barring a few open fast breaks they did a good job on fast break defense.

But anyways that wasnt the main point we were talking about how deep the lakers were ;)

Just 2 quick things. That was their 1st win since 2004 against Phx with their entire squad healthy (and sans Kobe, Kwame, Mihm). I don't think they match up well with Phx. They did face off 9 times between the playoffs and this preseason, however. Experience... Plus, LA have been relatively fast starters even when they were mediocre (.642 in their first 20 games since 1991/92 & won 14 of last 15 openers).

Bottom line is the Lakers allowed the Suns to shoot 51%, they were insanely hot and shot 55%. Sounds like the same team as last season if you ask me.

C'mon...no one allows Phx to shoot 50 percent. They do two things well: run and shoot. To beat them, you have to limit both of those as much as possible and attack the paint.
