Last Saturday, I drove to Stockton to see the Stockton Thunder hockey team in the brand new downtown arena. The Thunder are the double-A affiliate of the Phoenix Coyotes NHL team. I sat in the seventh row on center ice for $16. We lost the game against the Florida Everblades 5-4 in overtime, but it was a great game and the arena is beautiful! The arena also hosts the California Cougars soccer team and this spring, the Stockton Lightning arena football team. There is a new ballpark next door where the Stockton Ports baseball team will play. An example of what a new arena can do for the downtown area (although the Neil Diamond concert financing controversy was a big embarrasment and the city should have been more honest on how much they were spending).
