Breaking News: Canada dominates the United States 24-10, to win the Gold Medal match in women's rugby sevens. The ten points that Canada gave up to the US were the only points they allowed in the entire tournament!

It is my sincere hope that, as we are finally starting to see in women's tennis, Simone Manuel's success in the pool will lead to the eventual growth of swimming in the African American community.
One career arc in swimming is to win a surprise gold at the Olympics and then fade back into the crowd. That could have been her after Rio. I'll never forget the look on her face when she realized she'd done it.

At these Worlds she did it again, which is stepping up to the next level. In Manuel and Caeleb Dressel, USA has THE badass in all the sprints and all the anchor legs. I'm really looking forward to Tokyo - should be a lot of fun.

If USA Swimming is smart, they'll figure out a way to pay her to become a full-time motivational speaker after Tokyo. What she can potentially mean to the long-term growth of swimming in the United States is something that can't be measured.

Man, the United States did not send an optimal team to Lima, to compete in the men's 3x3 basketball. I just had to look at the official website, because the games haven't been on ESPN but, like, the women are 5-0; the men are 1-3, with a game to go, against the Dominican Republic. And I think they need a win, and some luck to advance to the knockout stage.

Breaking News: the United States beats Dominican Republic in men's 3x3 basketball, 21-11, to advance to the knockout stage. They got in ahead of Argentina via tiebreaker, but Argentina beat the US head-to-head, so the tiebreaker must have been point differential, or something.

Now that this thing is almost over, I decided to finally separate the events by sport:

Athletics
  • Kara Winger (USA) wins the women's javelin. Ariana Ince (USA) takes bronze.
  • Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce wins the women's 200m in 22.62, setting a new Pan American Games record. United States did not qualify for this event. A two-time Olympic Gold Medalist, this was Fraser-Pryce's first major event since giving birth.

What is it about the psychology of sports fans that nothing makes sports fans happier than being able to say, "You doubted us, and we proved you wrong!"
