Besides the Proposition Q & R losses in Sacramento, here's a weblinked article on last night's election news with a sports connection in other parts of the country.

Including:

(1.) Pittsburgh Steelers great Lynn Swann losing his bid to become the Governor of Pennsylvania.

(2.) Colorado state legislator Angie Paccione, who once played basketball at Stanford during the early 80’s (long before they became an NCAA powerhouse), lost her race for a seat in the U.S. Congress.

(3.) Former NFL (and Univ. of Tennessee) quarterback Heath Shuler won his race for Congress, beating out an incumbent.

(4.) Track star Jim Ryun, a Republican Congressman from Kansas for the past ten years, lost his re-election race.

(5.) Former middleweight boxer Joe DeNucci won his re-election race for State Auditor of Massachusetts.

(6.) In Missouri, several baseball players joined a campaign to oppose funding of stem-cell research.

(7.) Mina Brees, the estranged mother of New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees, lost her try for a seat on the Texas Court of Appeals. Mina used Drew’s name and image on her TV commercials, but without Drew’s permission. Drew even threatened to sue her!

(8.) Very tight race involving the incumbent U.S. Senator George Allen of Virginia. Allen’s father coached the NFL Los Angeles Rams in the 60’s and the Washington Redskins in the early 70’s.

(9.) Former surfing champion Fred Hemmings won another term in his race for the Hawaii state senate.

(10.) Proposition to ban government monies to fund sporting venues passes in the Seattle area.

Thanks for this. I was curious after Shuler won about other athletes, I knew most of these but did not know about Paccione's involvement with the Cardinal even though I was well aware of her campaign. And I definitely never heard of Drew Brees's mom which is probably the funniest thing I've heard today.

A few other things of note (not sure if these are mentioned in the links) - Kurt Warner was also involved in the anti-stem cell commercial as was Jim Caviezel and Patricia Heaton and I think a NASCAR guy. That initiative passed. On the other side of this issue was Michael J Fox who appears to be batting 1.000 with candidates/issues he endorsed this year.

Also Lynn Swann's Steeler teammate, Franco Harris, actively campaigned for his opponent.
