Pandering and gerrymandering
By Bites

Title? What title? You’d never have known that a Sacramento basketball team was playing for a national title last week unless you happened to drive past City Hall. Where were the signs in the back windows of cars? Where were the full-color pullout sections in the Bee? Why is Bites the only one wearing purple in the office?

While KHTK Sports1140’s Monty ’til Midnight radio talk show has been pandering to the worst of misogyny by claiming that a WNBA title isn’t a real title, the Bee’s Marcos Bretón used his column to proclaim that the Monarchs’ title race isn’t important because it’s a “niche interest.” Meaning, he doesn’t care. Gosh, the television ratings and ticket sales don’t match those of the Kings, so it must not be real sports!

Bites thinks it’s time to take a bite out of sexism and point out that if the Royal Court Dancers were on the verge of winning a national competition, these guys would be all over that as a once-in-a-lifetime event. The same boys who think Pop Warner football is great fun don’t even know that the Sacramento Sirens have won three (or is it four?) national titles in a row--and if they did, they’d say it wasn’t important.

The Bee’s Ailene Voisin, quoting U.S. Basketball Hall of Famer Nancy Lieberman, notes that the NBA had pretty crappy ticket sales and television ratings when it had been up and running for less than a decade, too. And, by the way, Lieberman’s in the same Hall of Fame as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Earvin “Magic” Johnson and John Wooden. So are Anne Donovan (coach of the Seattle Storm), Ann Meyers and Pat Summitt. Wanna bet that some of the women on this year’s Monarchs team are there someday, too?

Listen up, boys: Just because you don’t like the sport doesn’t mean it’s not a real sport. Bites doesn’t much care for hockey and can’t see why it’s on television but is smart enough to avoid slamming it in the presence of Mrs. Bites, who thinks it’s the best thing since canned beer. Grow up, quit whining and get used to sharing the playground.

Note: I do not want to see this turn into a heated debate about the WNBA, but since that appears to be the direction this will most likely take, I'm reminding people on both sides of the issue that we do not allow personal attacks, flame fests, smack, etc.

When you post an article like this, you've opened the doors to the naysayers. Let's please keep it civil.

Thank you.

No prob VF21. I just happened to see this and thought it was another interesting view. I didn't even think about editing out the other political stuff in the column. Thanks for clearing it out for me!

Although I'm a different sorta guy (I attended 10 Monarchs games this season), I don't really see this post as causing much hullabaloo.

It may tend to polarize the sexes a bit, which is not quite right when it comes to WNBA basketball versus NBA basketball. A lot of women won't go near the women's game but love to watch the men.

The whole thing with the "other guys" is that they enjoy watching professional basketball for different reasons than I do. They want to see mega-athleticism, death-defying leaps, and thunderous slam dunks. That's what gets them off.

For me, being a basketball "purist", I enjoy the game for what it is. I've coached girls' AAU ball and have covered high school girls' basketball teams for my local newspaper. I love the spirit, heart, hustle, attention to D, and fundamental skills the girls possess. All of these attributes are often missing from NBA players (but hey, I'm a Kings season ticket holder, too, so no bias in those remarks).

The game is a bit slower and lower in the WNBA.

But it's not a snail's pace, and it's not all played at ground level. The ladies provide excitement in many ways similar to the guys and in many ways different.

It all depends on what you're looking for and what you enjoy.

If you say that it's just that you'd rather solely watch the men because they are simply so much better, so be it. But don't let me catch you tuning in to a college basketball game on TV or going down the street to a local men's high school basketball game to watch. Those games include individuals and teams that are unarguably NOT better than NBA individuals and teams.

If you say that you can just watch ANY men's basketball because it is so much more exciting, raher watch a boys' high school JV team than the WNBA, well I'd say that you have a little introspection to perform.

The bottom line for me through all this is that it's OK if folks don't like the WNBA game, but keep your freakin' yapper shut about 1) criticizing those that do enjoy it and 2) trying to belittle the meaning of the title just won by the Monarchs.

On #2, my theory is that these folks just witnessed that their hometown won a world professional sports title, they had no emotional interest and thus couldn't share in it, and they saw many that were reveling, so they tried to dump on it.

Meanies. :p

1kingzfan - My comments were pre-emptory in nature. Hopefully with the ground rules set ahead of time, some of the usual stuff that shows up (and gets quickly deleted) won't be here to begin with.

nancgo - Thanks for understanding!

Yeah, thanx...the haters may not show for this one...

Pardon my ignorance, but what's SNR, and who the blue hell is "Bites?"

EDIT - regarding the article itself:

This part in particular stands out to me; there seems to be some kind of paradigm among many of my male "bretheren" that male sports are inherently superior to female sports, with some people going so far as to suggest that there are some boys' high-school teams in the country that could beat the WNBA Champions in any given year...

I call these people idiots...

SNR is The Sacramento News & Review, a free publication which comes out weekly. One of the columns is called "Capitol Bites" or simply "Bites", which is kind of a gossipy column written (anonymously) by one or more of their staffers, and some material and local news tips are submitted by readers.

I find it very ironic that the SNR singles out the daily Sacramento Bee for its supposed lack of Monarchs coverage. But to my knowledge, the SNR has NEVER mentioned the Monarchs at all this year! They don't even have a sports section! I am even thinking of writing to the SNR for its hypocrisy!

SNR stands for Sacramento News & Review (they also have Chico and Reno editions). A free weekly newspaper found in and around the Sacramento area. “Bites” is a column that comments on various news bits, generally in a sardonic fashion.

edit: Steven beat me to it.

They will have an occassional article about the team. I think their only bad spot was a few years ago, when they had some gossipy junk piece about the player's personal lives. I was so livid I wrote to the editor and they published my letter.

While they may not have featured the Monarchs this year, they have continually chronicled the team's home and away schedule in their weekly calendar section. They also do allow folks to vote for their favorite Monarchs player in their "Best of Sacramento" voting.

I don't remember that gossipy piece, but that tells me a couple of things...(1) it must have been a while ago and (2) it must have been about Latasha Byears - whose personal life and exploits around town were the only I can think could rise to the level of being gossip column worthy.

There are folks who say high schoolers could beat the WNBA champion? Wow! I think there were some NCAA women's college champions some high school teams would have a tough time beating. I'd love to see these couch duffers step on a court and try to put a shot up or grab a rebound in the paint against the Western conf allstar front court, oh hell, throw Cheryl Ford in there too. That needs to be some sort of pay per view reality series for the haters to participate in and W fans to watch. Even the men who do regularly scrimmage against W teams say these women are for real.

The level of play is very good now and is only going to get better because I swear every year the national crop of college freshman at the D1 level is getting more and more and more athletic and basketball-talent gifted.

get outta town.....it wasn't Tot huh? There are a couple of other folks I could think of but they are so far down the chart from Tot I cant imagine how they would bypass her to write about them.

It was more about the league rather than any individual Monarchs players.

The last time I can remember the Monarchs being mentioned in the SNR was the time shortly after their first coach, Mary Murphy, was fired. And that was what, 1997 or '98?

The SNR may have mentioned the Monarchs since then, but if they have, I probably missed that issue. But I am very disappointed that I haven't seen any articles about the Monarchs during the 2005 season, especially when you consider it was their triumphant championship year! :(

Other than the SacBee, the only other local (Sacramento) publication that mentions the Monarchs regularly is a GLBT publication called "Outword", which is free on some newsstands and published every other week. At least their pieces on the Monarchs are very supportive! (which is more than I can say about the SacBee or the SNR!)

I'd like to hear what nancgo had to say. Is there another local forum that
will allow it, like (but unlike) the Geoff Petrie page for the Kings?
I'm sure we can all see that not allowing political commentary is, in itself,
political.
Thanks.

nancgo didn't "say" anything. She simply pasted an article about Monarchs coverage. Some of the article had political coverage (on other topics)in it as well. This is not a political site, but a basketball site. Simple as that.

We've been there and done that, RosevilleBill: we had a political/current events forum on this board before, and it became so devisive that it nearly ruined the entire site, so it was decided to do away with it.

I mean, I would like to be able to discuss current events with other Kings Fans, too, but I'm not losing any sleep over not being able to...

Absolutely. I still cringe when I think of how ugly and nasty this board got and how onetime forum friends turned against each other when 'The Foxhole' (political forum) was introduced on this website a couple of years ago. Believe me, we don't want to go there again! But to answer your question Roseville Bill, there are plenty of political forums out there. Delphi has a massive list of forums http://www.delphiforums.com and for local, I think the Sacramento Bee website has a forum, although I don't know anything about it.

Sorry, but the rules on political content are not open to debate. I'm sure we can all see that the administrators/owners of a particular message board have the right and obligation to determine what they feel is best for the site they own.

If you would like to discuss this further, please send me a PM.
