Sheffield!

Im sure youve seen it by now but if you havent Gary Sheffield cought an elbow from a RedSox fan in the eighth. The fan appeared to be reaching for the ball when he caught Sheffield in the lip. Sheff swiped at him then turned and threw the ball into the infield. He then turned back toward the fan and went at him fist clenched. Then visions of Ron Artest flashed through his head and he kept his composure. Cooler heads eventually prevaled. Security was awesome--keeping things from getting out of control. The fan was reaching onto the field during a live play. I think baseball fans with front row tickets might need to pass an IQ test before entering the stadium. When will they learn that you dont reach out on the field of play? Props to Sheff for not going ballistic! I know he isnt exactly considered a Nice Guy so I was glad to see him show some restraint. Just another twist in the rvalry.:p

As was stated on ESPN... its almost certain he wasnt going for the ball. It was rolling along the wall and he couldnt have seen where it was. He tried to get a cheap blow in and should be in trouble for what he tried. Plus... I think if it was an accident things would have been different. There was no need to be swearing at Sheff the whole time from the same fan who hit him.

I am not a big fan of Sheffield. However, he did a good job of calming himself down. Security did an excellent job of keeping things from getting out of hand.

My opinion: any fan who makes deliberate physical contact with a player (in any sport) during a game (especially on the "field of play") should not only be kicked out of the ballpark, but should also be arrested. I don't care how much you pay for your seat, you have no right to assault a player (with anything).

It is SOOOO dumb that people seem to think they have a right to get "involved" in the game. I wish fans would be held accountable for their actions. Sheffield could lose a lot of money (granted he has tons but its still green) All fans ever seem to get is ejected. Im pretty sure they usually dont get banned from a ballpark unless they get arrested which rarely happens. Its such a double-standard!

after that initial shove, i thought sheff was gonna stuff the ball down that idiot's throat.

also, did anybody see that fan flinch when sheff made a quick move towards him?? :D i thought it was hillarious.

What I thought was stupid was how that one fan obviously tried to pour his drink on Sheff...that is stupid...i mean thats all you got? I agree with what Joe Torre said...if the fan was going for the ball he would have bent over at the waist and would have really been leaning over the fence..in this case he definetly wasn't...I also think its telling that Sheff said usually when he's out in the field he doesn't notice the fans and is basically clueless as to what goes on around him so for him to actually take note of this says something unless the fan really did HIT him in the face with his hand...he did show restraint...even as a Yankees fan myself I wasn't all that enthusiastic about him doubling back to get in the guys face but hey it could have been worse...I think it was enough how he stuck the glove right in that guys face..I thought that was rather funny actually...I also found it amusing on how quick that lady and her daughter who were sitting next to those men got the hell out of there...lol...to tell you the truth I am rather surprised that everyone IS in Sheff's side about the ordeal...MLB included

I agree to a certain extend 6th, but I think if do something like that you should be kicked from the game and have your season tickets taken away or banned from the park for the year.

Arresting some of these morons who will only get a fine won't even pee them off. Taking away their right to see their team might make them think a bit.

I got no problem with that, bdub. Arrest them immediately, then take away their season tickets. :D

Someone was talking on the radio the other day (Mike Krukow maybe) and saying he thought they should fine fans...like $500 if you reach on the field...something like that.

I'm all for taking away their season tix but is that really possible can they do that?
If you read any ticket there is usually a disclaimer that says the ticket remains the property of (blah blah team). And, that they have the right to rescind it at any time........or something like that.

You would think that after the Ron Artest incident, fans and players alike would both keep themselves under better composure during game time.

sigh. guess not.

But props to Sheffield for keeping himself like that.
