Shaq a candidate for microfracture surgery?

^ Heat forum discussion on a BSPN article claiming that this is a rumor w/ legs under it. How many of you foresee the Heat nabbing Greg Oden if Shaq goes down for the season?

Same 'ol Shaq - taking his annual 4-6 weeks off during the regular season. They will make the playoffs. Just look at NJ, they have a 7-9 record to lead their division. Miami has a similar record. I think they will get to the playoffs but will most likely be out in the first round.

Boy this will really mess up the Heat. That's 20 million dollars of deadweight if Shaq gets microfracture surgery. Shaq just doesn't seem like the guy who has the will to really rehab properly and it will really mess him up. And it's not like he has a jumpshot to rely on if he can't post up. Microfracture could pretty much kill his career.

Now that I saw the highlights from the Heat's game at Memphis, I'll have to agree with you on Miami making the playoffs. They've got a lot of luck on their side, even w/ Shaq out.

You remember 1997, I'm sure. We couldn't win a title after Shaq tore up his knee. He was out for too long, everything went haywire in his absence. Hell, it's debatable that Shaq missing the first 12 games of 2003 cost us the title. Injuries sunk us in 2004 as well. More often than not, you seem to need continuity in the regular season in order to be a legit title contender.

The Heat, however, find themselves in the Bizarro NBA where there's no one but SA who can really challenge them. The only team in the East who comes close is Detroit, who were stronger last year. The Heat winning the title last year was disgusting enough. (I saw a pic on that site of GP holding a trophy and I said, "Eww.") If they won a title this year because SA lost to Dallas again, it would be a statement about the sorry shape of this league. Shaq missing most of the reg season and still winning a chip is the Holy Grail for him.

This is stillBSPN we're talkin about here, but I wanted to post it just in case they got one right. That article says that he might be able to play with the injury, but Shaq has always said that he doesn't want to walk like Phil Jackson or Bill Walton when he's 50. If he did play with that, I'd gain some respect for his will to win, but such a thing would go counter to his image as a malingerer.
