Musselman flexes interview skills

Eric Musselman may be muscling his way into the Kings' head-coaching position.

After Monarchs coach John Whisenant appeared to have a stronghold on the job formerly held by Rick Adelman, Musselman - a Memphis assistant and former Golden State head coach - interviewed for the second time Thursday in Las Vegas and impressed the Kings' brain trust once again.

Kings president of basketball operations Geoff Petrie, who did not return a call for comment, made the day trip from Sacramento to meet Musselman. Kings co-owners Joe and Gavin Maloof also were on hand, with all six members of the Maloof family taking part either in person or by phone.

While it is believed the Kings have wanted to interview Phoenix assistant Marc Iavaroni - whose team is in the Western Conference finals - there is also a time element that involves Petrie. He is scheduled to leave Sunday for the predraft camp in Orlando, Fla., which runs from Tuesday to June 10. If the Maloofs and Petrie decide on either Musselman, Whisenant, or Golden State assistant Mario Elie (who also was interviewed), a decision could come before Sunday.

It is a virtual fork in the road, with the alternative to open up the search to more candidates and delay the process.

Petrie and the Maloofs - who also didn't return calls for comment - are expected to convene today to pick a direction.

Whisenant said Thursday he has been given no timeline or final verdict. Neither Whisenant nor Elie had a second interview scheduled.

Musselman has been in this position before, having interviewed for the head-coaching jobs in Orlando and Minnesota last offseason before losing out to Brian Hill and Dwayne Casey, respectively. But when Musselman landed the Warriors job in 2002, he was said to be no less dazzling in the interview process.

At the time, Musselman was an assistant in Atlanta, and he was asked to interview for an assistant position with Golden State. But his agent, Lonnie Cooper, pushed Musselman as a head-coaching candidate.

Musselman finished what Cooper had started in the interview process, and former Kings coach and then-Warriors general manager Garry St. Jean pulled the trigger on the risky hire. And so began a two-year stint in which the Warriors were markedly improved from the previous four campaigns, posting 37- and 38-win seasons after averaging 23.6 wins in the previous eight seasons.

Seems like the Maloofs have been holding their whiz a long time...

Time for some relief.

LOL

the suspense of a new coach is killing me!!

Unfortunately, I am at the point of not caring anymore. I shall not exhibit the Stockholm Syndrom, and assume some simpathy for my captors.

I say if they have other candidates they seriously want to look into, then you wait. Who cares that Geoff will be gone until the 10th. That's next Saturday. Really not that long. Yes it sucks to wait, but I'd rather they explore everyone they'd like to explore instead of forcing a decision.
