SacBee article on Joey B's closing

#1
As you know, in this season, we've had viewing parties at Joey B's. But now with that place closing, here's the word from the SacBee, and the reason why it's closing down.

We're still taking nominations for a new location!

NothingButHoops suggested the Oshima Sushi, which is nearby Arco. I was there couple of nights ago watching the M's beating the Houston Comets. It's an interesting place with several large TV screens, and one particularly big one. I would not mind having our next viewing party there. But does anyone else have other suggestions?

There's a place called the Palm Street Pub and Grill in Carmichael on the corner of Fair Oaks Blvd. and Marconi/Palm. My brother and I watched a few Kings games there in the past, and it was a great place. I have no idea if they show Monarchs games, but I can't imagine why not.

I also think the criteria for choosing a new viewing place for a Monarchs game would also largely depend on a few factors:

(1.) If the bar has NBA-TV or Comcast SportsNet, which depends if the bar has DirectTV or the Dish satellite network. Not all WNBA games are on ESPN and not all bars carry NBA-TV. You might recall last year, the first round of the Western Conference playoffs (Monarchs vs. L.A. Sparks) were shown only on NBA-TV, and not the cable channels, which really ticked off most of us!

(2.) If the bar has a staff that is supportive of the Monarchs and women's sports, in general. Do not go to places where the staff snickers or scoffs at anything to do with the WNBA or women's sports (hint: The Barbacoa Breeze in Citrus Heights).

Has anyone tried to contact the Monarchs' staff on a new viewing location? Are they aware that Joey B's is closing?

They are aware that Joey B's is closing and will let folks know of a new place for the party they had planned for next Sunday. They had a string of them last year for the various parties they held so I don't think they'll have problems finding a new one. They went to Players, The Library and one other place last year.
