Keys to Winning Round 1 vs San Antonio
DEFEND THE 3 POINT SHOT
Clearly that has been a serious weakness of the Monarchs over the last few weeks or so. On average over the last eight games teams are 60-154 from the three shooting 39 percent.
Over the last two games against Phoenix and two games against San Antonio they are combined shooting at a 43 percent clip (40-93) from the 3 point line. THAT CLEARLY HAS TO CHANGE!!!!! The Monarchs can not afford to give up extra points from three. Let Bekkah and Yo do their thing against Young, Irvin and Little straight up no double team. But our perimeter players (particularly Ticha, Chelsea and Nicole) can not leave their shooters, not one bit.
PICK UP THE TEMPO PACE
On offense, let's force the issue on the fast break a little. It is clear that Sacramento needs easy baskets. I don't know how the Silver Stars transition defense is, but lets see. Get easy shots.
NICOLE POWELL MUST BE AGGRESSIVE
She has had the best season of her career this season. The Monarchs need somebody to average 20 points a night in order to succeed. Every other team in the tournament has a go to, break them down, create their own shot, capable of scoring 20 a night player. WE NEED NICOLE POWELL TO BECOME THAT IN THE POST SEASON.
CONTAIN BECKY HAMMON AND DENY HER
Try to keep the ball out of Hammon's hands as much as you possibly can. She is Steve Nash. As Hammon goes, so goes the Silver Stars. As you saw in the last game, in the first half she had them going, in the second half she was shut down and so was San Antonio. It is up to newton and Ticha to wear her down defensively.
TURNOVERS, TURNOVERS, TURNOVERS
Protect the ball please. No forcing passes into the teeth of the zone. No Adrian Williams trying to make something happen by putting the ball on the floor. No Latangela at all period. And no Haynie or "Sho-time" Robinson throwing stupid passes to the opposition.
