Capsule is the the connective tissue that surrounds any joint, knee joint as well, and creates a vacuum around the joint that holds the joint together.
Sprain is over- stretching or over-use of a tissue, we hear often about ankle sprains, which is damage to an ankle/ foot ligament after over stretching it.
Capsule sprain would be stretching or damaging the capsule that surrounds the knee joint (could also happen by pinching the tissue or other damage to the capsule).
The thing is, there are several levels of sprains, 1-3, which differ a lot in the time needed to return to full activity.
So we can't really know how bad Rudy's knee is, just from the title of his injury.
Oh, and lateral means the outside part of the knee, in contrast to medial which is the inner part of it. (medial would be the part closer to the other knee, I mean)
A level worse than a sprain is a tear and that's the kind of thing that requires surgery. He doesn't have that so we exhale in gratefulness. Now we wait for it to heal. They didn't rate it 1-3 but the impression I get is that it is not bad and that is what concerns us the most. It still will take awhile to heal but you don't need a complete healing to play.
I sprained my right knee a month ago, the medial area. I suppose I should know what ligament is involved but I don't. For about a month I have been barely able to walk and I actually considered seeing a doctor - rare for me.I'm not a wimp. In the last few days I have been feeling a lot better. Maybe that gives a clue as to how long it takes ME to heal. I hope Rudy heals faster than me.

That's a great description. I got stuck on the idea that the capsule was sprained. I had never heard of that and I am still having trouble understanding how it happens.
Anyway, it can be simplified as we all have had sprains. Usually, and I thought "always", it's an overstretching of a ligament. The knee has multiple ligaments to worry about. We have all heard the initials describing them (ACL, MCL, blah, blah). Let us use the most common situation our limited brains can understand as I suspect whether it is a sprain of a ligament or a sprain of the capsule isn't crucial to understanding what we are all concerned with which is WHEN WILL RUDY PLAY AGAIN!!.![]()
As a somewhat related problem is the difference between a tear and a sprain. Didn't Casspi have a strain or sprain of his Achillles? Someone did. At the same time Corbin had an Achilles problem that required surgery. That was about a month ago and notice how much he still hobbles around. Anything that requires surgery requires far longer recovery time than a sprain.
Rudy doesn't need surgery.

I recall that Rudy himself was having that achilles problem as well. That was the reason he was doing the bike when on the bench. Casspi has some knee problem. I wonder if he could be reactivated now to ease a bit the pressure at SF and to give Rudy some more time to recover?
