RICE TO RETIRE WITH THE 49ERS
November 19 Half-Time Show Dedicated to Retirement

The club announced Saturday that wide receiver Jerry Rice will officially retire from football as a member of the San Francisco 49ers during the November 19 game against the Seattle Seahawks.

Rice will hold a press conference at the 49ers Facility in Santa Clara on Thursday, August 24, 2006 at 11 a.m. PT.

The momentous half-time ceremony will include a video montage of Rice and an address by the future Hall of Famer.

“While Jerry is going to sign his contract on August 24 to retire as a 49er, it really will not be official until he celebrates in front of the fans on November 19,” said team owner John York. “Having Jerry retire as a member of the 49ers is extremely important to Denise and me, and it is equally important to our fans and every former 49ers player that has ever worn the uniform.”

Generally regarded as the greatest wide receiver in NFL history, Rice caught an NFL-record 1,549 passes during his career. He played twenty-one seasons in the NFL, the first 16 of those with the 49ers, helping the team win three Super Bowls, XXIII, XXIV and XXIX.

“I’m excited to return to San Francisco to retire as a 49er,” Rice said. “This was my home for many years and this is where so many memories were made. I thank the entire 49ers organization for the opportunity to stand on the field to say goodbye.”

Rice holds many NFL records including; receiving yards (22,895), receptions (1,549), touchdown receptions (197), touchdown receptions in a single season (22), receiving yards gained in a single season (1,848) and consecutive games with at least one reception (274). He also made the Pro Bowl for ten consecutive years.

Fans can purchase tickets to see the Jerry Rice halftime ceremony on November 19th when single game tickets go on sale on August 26th.

Following the press conference on Thursday, Rice will host his SIRIUS NFL Radio talk show, ‘The Afternoon Blitz,’ live from the 49ers facility in Santa Clara with co-host Tim Ryan. Rice began his broadcasting career on SIRIUS Satellite Radio in June. He can be heard three days a week throughout the year exclusively on SIRIUS NFL Radio, channel 124.

That is cool...I remember saying it was bad they weren't doing this when he retired. Nice to see them doing it now. He is always a 49er in my eyes and should go into the HOF as a niner.
