Ref in controversy has house vandalized
NFL referee Pete Morelli is having a rough week.

On Sunday, Morelli made one of the more controversial calls in NFL history, overturning what appeared to be an interception by the Steelers' Troy Polamalu. On Monday, his Stockton, Calif. home was vandalized, according to police reports.
Lieutenant Thomas Wells of the Stockton Police Department told FOXSports.com's Jay Glazer that a police report was filed after a rock was thrown through Morelli's living room window late Monday night after Morelli and his wife had gone to bed. Lt. Wells emphasized that police had no suspect and no motive in the case and could not say with any degree of certainty whether the act of vandalism was related to Sunday's call.
"We are aware of the situation and we're cooperating with police in any way we can," said NFL spokesman Greg Aiello.
On Monday, the NFL admitted that Morelli had erred when he used instant replay to overturn the interception. Mike Pereira, the league's VP of officiating, said in a statement that the call on the field should have stood. "He maintained possession long enough to establish a catch," Pereira said. "Therefore, the replay review should have upheld the call on the field that it was a catch and fumble." Fortunately for Morelli — and the Steelers — while the botched call allowed the Colts to eventually pull within a field goal, it ultimately did not play any role in the outcome of the game, which Pittsburgh won, 21-18.

It's unfortunate that someone felt the need to take the whole messed up call issue WAY too far. I mean, come on! Yeah, the uncle and I were screaming at the ref while watching the game, but it didn't affect the outcome in the end regardless.

Besides, the NFL stepped up and admitted the overturned call was a mistake....that's all MOST of us Steeler fans were looking for anyway. It's fans like that who give the rest of us a bad image........damn shame.

I agree, regardless of what takes place on the field this is completely uncalled for. Sad when refs and other officials have to fear for their personal safety because of fans who take it too far.

I totally agree with what you said. Just imagine how bad this could of been if that bad call did effect the outcome of the game.

I winced yesterday when I heard Mike Lamm (sp?) talk about the ref living in Stockton. Not hard for some jerk to go online and find his address, then prove their lunacy by vandalizing the guy's property. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that some low class sport's radio nut gave out his home address and encouraged the vandalism.

What really sucks is that now the NFL will rethink it's decision to announce that a mistake was made. I found it very refreshing compared to the past when obviously horrible calls were never discussed publicly. (I'm thinking the phantom defensive holding call on Ronnie Lott in Washington in the '83 NFC Championship game among others) I'm sure the vandal never makes a mistake at his job, cleaning the slurpee machine!

I agree wholeheartedly with you, Tubiscus. Unfortunately, I think that the person who felt the need to vandalize this ref's home would have done so regardless of whether or not the NFL admitted they made a mistake.

You're probably right in that some schumch gave out the ref's address. It's just sad.

how did the idiot who did this to him get his address?
i find that very classless. there was no need to vanadalize the man's house over a game. especially when the steelers STILL WON THE GAME!!!
some people need to be hit on the head with baseball bats

If he is a principal, it might have been a student who's mad because the principal took his iPod or cell phone away and really had nothing to do with the game.

yeah..............no one knows yet who did it, so its all speculation if it was a pissed off fan.

I think this is blown way out of proportion. Why would a fan be pissed off at a ref when the team won the game?? I think this was not even related to the game but people feel the need to run with it and paint it that way.

So it would have been okay for the official to have his house vandalized if the Steelers had lost the game because of the blown play?

And, further, the best way to deal with idiot vandals is to go vigilante and beat them with baseball bats?

And people wonder why things like the horrific events in Florida against those homeless men happen...

:(
