DURHAM, N.C. (AP) -- Duke basketball star J.J. Redick was arrested early Tuesday on charges of drunken driving, another blow to a school shaken by a lacrosse scandal.
Redick, The Associated Press Player of the Year, also was charged with making an illegal U-turn. His driver's license was revoked for 30 days, police spokeswoman Kammie Michael said.
The 21-year-old Redick was released on $1,000 bond shortly after being taken before a Durham County magistrate. He is to appear in court July 17.
Redick had a blood-alcohol level of 0.11. The legal limit for drivers in North Carolina is 0.08.
"I regret what happened last night and want to apologize to my family and the Duke community for the incident," Redick said in a statement issued by the university.
Redick finished his career as the leading scorer in Atlantic Coast Conference history. He is expected to be a high first-round pick in the June 28 NBA draft.
"J.J. knows he made a mistake and regrets it," Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said in a statement. "He represented the very best in college athletics and exhibited outstanding character at Duke the last four years. He is and will continue to be a credit to the Duke basketball family. As his friend and his coach, he has my total support."
The Duke campus has been roiled the past few months after members of the men's lacrosse team were accused of raping a dancer at a party March 13. Three players have been charged in a case that has polarized the community.
Redick was arrested soon after 1 a.m. when he turned around as he approached a license check point near the Duke campus, Michael said. He pulled into a parking lot of an apartment complex after police pursued him.
"There wasn't a chase. He didn't run from them," Michael said. "He was pretty cooperative."
Redick holds the NCAA career record for 3-pointers. The guard averaged nearly 27 points a game.

Oh good grief.

Some of these young men are simply too STUPID to be allowed out without keepers.

He's a couple of weeks away from the biggest moment of his life - being drafted by the NBA - and now this?

And he's a credit to the Duke basketball family?

Can't condone the behavior, but I do give him a little credit for being cooperative with the officers and taking responsibility.....as opposed to so many others who were "just giving her a ride"...etc

a college student drank a little and drove home? end of the world!

on the meter of stupid things that athletes do, 1 being a bad mistake of youth or circumstance and 10 being going ron artest on someone, this is about a 1.5. from the sound of it he wasn't even driving badly, just over the legal limit. stupid and irresponsible? yes. reason to judge his character and call him stupid? nah. i'm sure plenty of people on this board have done some less than savory things in their youth.

Granted, but I don't think that makes him a "credit to the Duke basketball family."

captain bill - Unfortunately, there are way too many college students drinking a little and then driving home. And yes, virtually everyone at one time or another has probably done it. But that doesn't make it right. And things don't always end well.

Drinking and driving is an incredibly stupid thing to do. It's one of the few causes of death that is totally and completely preventable. That's why I called him stupid. The possible consequences just aren't worth the risk, IMHO. If you're going to drink, don't drive.

To me what's most stupid about it is the fact that he would risk dropping in the draft by doing something this stupid. At least wait until you are already a multimillionaire before you start acting above the law...

i completely agree. the kid wants to screw up and make bone head decisions he woulda been smart to at least wait to get the best possible positioning in the draft. he stands to make millions and is already approaching it in a negative way.
