Rattay to start over Smith

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Tim Rattay will be the San Francisco 49ers' starting quarterback for the season opener, reclaiming his job from No. 1 draft pick Alex Smith after just two preseason games.

Coach Mike Nolan announced the decision Tuesday at the conclusion of the 49ers' first full practice following the death of offensive lineman Thomas Herrion, who collapsed in the locker room in Denver on Saturday night.

The players and coaches seemed grateful to focus on something other than their grief and mourning -- and Smith, Herrion's college teammate and friend for two years at Utah, was able to put his first pro disappointment in perspective.

"I know how this works," Smith said. "This is a team game. This isn't all about me. I think the team wants to win now. We expect to win now, and as of right now, this looks like the right decision. Hopefully, I keep getting better and keep pushing it. Who knows what happens in the future, but right now, I understand it."

Smith struggled as the 49ers' starter in their first two preseason games, while Rattay was outstanding as the backup. Rattay started nine games for San Francisco last season in his only season as a first-stringer, but struggled all season with three injuries.

Rattay took the news with his usual placid demeanor. He has worked closely with Smith in training camp, and the players have developed a friendship that transcends their competition.

"I've been working hard, [and] I'd like to say I was excited to hear it," Rattay said. "I just felt like if I kept practicing hard, something good will happen. You can't get too upset or too happy in the course of training camp."

The first-team offense floundered with Smith in charge in the first two preseason games. He failed to lead San Francisco to a first down on his first four series of the exhibition opener against Oakland, and he went through similar struggles in Denver.

Smith went 5-for-16 for 43 yards without a touchdown pass in the first two games, while Rattay was 13-of-19 for 194 yards and three TDs.

Nolan said the competition is closed, with Rattay remaining the starter for the season, barring injury. The coach began camp hoping Smith would win the job and discounting the wisdom of keeping a top draft pick out of action, but he had nothing but praise for both quarterbacks.

"I was pleased with both of them, but naturally Tim has showed the upper hand when it came to experience," Nolan said. "The rookie did a very good job for a guy that's had to come out and try to learn as much as he can. He's done everything to prove that we're right in our [draft] selection. He'll just get better and better and get closer to having that job, but in the meantime, it is Tim's job right now, and I look for him to perform well."

Carson Palmer, the No. 1 pick in 2003, spent his entire rookie season on the Cincinnati bench behind Jon Kitna. Phillip Rivers, the No. 4 pick in 2004, sat out last season behind Drew Brees in San Diego.

Thanks for posting this...

I think Smith is going to have plenty of time to grow and mature within the system. I don't want to see him out there too soon, and end up being just another high-priced quarterback in the NFL who didn't make the grade.

Look at all the time Steve Young had to wait. It worked okay for him.

Rattay can't go more than 3 or 4 weeks without getting injured anyway, so it will give Smith a nice amount of time to settle in. I don't have any expectations for this season, and I would hate to see our No. 1 pick go down early, so this is welcome news.

Interesting info,

I don't think Rattay is the answer for your guy's problems (similar I don't think Bledsoe is ours)

Coach has to do what he can to win and I agree with him that Rattay will be better. However the Niners have more problems then just one position. You can thank the Yorks for that.

Smith will get his chance but for now I think Nolan made the right choice. I hope Rattay can avoid so many injuries this year. I think Nolan is a good choice for us. At this point I'm just hoping for big improvements on last year.

Basically, John York has gone a long way this year towards redeeming himself in my eyes.

Bringing Mike Nolan is a big plus.

I don't think we're looking at Rattay as the long-term answer to our problems; he wasn't last year, and I doubt if he will be in the years to come. For the record, Rattay will NEVER be a great QB - at least not in the mold of Montana and Young. What he might be, however, is the QB that allows Smith the time to grow and mature into the next great 49er QB.

The monetary woes the team has had over the years are finally starting to ease up. We're still rebuilding.

Arguably the toughest thing for the team to get over right now is going to be the loss of Thomas Herrion. From all reports, he was an extremely enthusiastic and charismatic young man.

The 49ers aren't quite ready to rise back to the top of the league quite yet. There are still gaping holes in key positions. At the best, we - the loyal NINER fans - can just hope we're headed back in the right direction.

:D

Im nearly done convincing myself that this team is finally on it's way to being on track again.

I honestly think this is a good idea...Rattay will play this year, hopefully remain injury free, look decent, then come this next offseason a desprate team trades us a 3rd round pick for him...We then plug Smith into the starting role, and he will show signs of greatness his first year, giving 9er's fans reason for hope, and from then on his game will explode, and he will be excelent, and return the 49er's to greatness!!!

Hey...I can dream, cant I ?

Rattay is worth more than a 3rd round pick.... IMO..... hes not that bad of a QB.... compare his last seasons stats to all the other qbs and keep in mind that he only played 9 games!

Remember my icon as I speak I am not claiming to be the most objective person on this. I more then anyone love to see the Niners fail. However with that said there was nothing better then the good ole days when the Niners and Cowboys faught it out every year, no matter who won.]

I think if as most of you have said RATTAY is not the long term answer for the Nners. Which I 100% agree with... Then IMO u may as well scrap this season since your not going anywhere anyway and give the ball to Smith. Let him learn from experience. As much as I hate the Niners I actually like AS.

Of course I understand Nolans view in that this is a what have you done for me now type of deal. York proved that this year only he is willing to spend, possibly just to get the fans off his back. Lets see what they do next year. I think he sucks as an owner, surely not on par with owners that are willing to spend whatever it takes to try put together a good team.

(note: we have our own QB problems not trying to give an answer to solve yours... Trying as hard as I can to be objective.)

First, I think you're totally misunderstanding the situation about Smith. I don't think it's all about "what have you done for me lately?" I think Nolan is going with Rattay for the obvious reason that Smith just isn't ready. The WORST thing you can do to a young QB is throw him to the wolves right out of the gate. Starting Rattay doesn't mean that Smith won't play. It does mean that Smith won't have all the pressure on him. I'm perfectly fine with this approach. As I pointed out before, we paid a lot of money for Steve Young and then let him sit on the bench for a while. That kinda turned out all right...

I won't defend John York because he's made a multitude of errors. I do believe, however, that he's attempting to go in the right direction. Getting rid of Donahue was huge and the selection of Mike Nolan was pretty close to perfect IMHO...as was bringing back long time player advisor Harry Edwards.

I am realistic enough not to expect miracles. But I do think I'm going to enjoy the football season more this year than I did last year...

I think he's suggesting the 49ers should have taken Rogers instead of Smith.

Given the current state of the 49ers O Line it's only a matter of time before Rattay is injured and Smith is forced to play. I'm only hoping Smith does not suffer a major injury playing behind that line!:(

I agree and I don't agree, I think there is enough QB's that started as a rookie and went through the growing pains. On the flip side their are the Steve Youngs...(however I am not certain but didn't SY start for TBay right away?) both sides of the issue could prove either sides wrong. I like the let the guy play side, he has to learn to read defenses, the Niners are gonna stink either way so the only risk is injury (which may be a real risk because the O line is horrible)

No kidding and to think we almost had Donahue as our head coach. I didn't like him then and I don't like him now. He is part of the reason the Niners are no longer Elite.

I hear ya, its been rough since both of our teams left the good ole glory days. I think short term Cowboys have a better upside and I am really excited about this year. Long term, I say get AS going and who knows. We have no long term QB. I expect Parcells to leave in a year or so then its Switzer land all over again. Well my next prediction is we get Urban Meyer..

I think you guys made a great move in Nolan, I think Rattay can do the job Dilfer style, enough to win games. However I have been known to be wrong and maybe Rattay turns out to be this years Drew Brees.

The one thing that bothered me about the possibility of Smith starting right away is that I have little faith in the offensive line up to this point and it would be literally like throwing the kid to that wolves. Its hard to learn when you're running for your life the whole time. Rattay also has shown thus far in the preseason to be quite comfortable running the offense and scoring. I'm perfectly alright with Rattay starting the season as the starter.

That said, I really like that direction of the 49ers. I'm trying real hard not to get my hopes up too high cause I don't want to be dissappointed, but I am encouraged about how things have transpired this offseason. I knew absolutely nothing about Nolan before the hiring but so far I love the way he has handled things and his no nonsense style. I just hope they have a little luck with the injury bug this year.

So after week 2, any chances of seeing alex smith in week 3? Rattay thought he was playing against elementary kids out there with his throws. I just hope the coaches know what were really getting out of rattay.
