Postgame Quotes-vs. Detroit

Kings Coach Rick Adelman
“I just can’t say enough about our team. After having that (road) trip the way it ended, everything that went on and getting in so late on Saturday morning. Putting that effort out today, you have just got to give them all the credit in the world. Everybody who played gave us a lift so it’s just a great game to start this home stand. We talked about trying to find out who we are as a team, get our injured players back and see if we can build some momentum as we go down the stretch here. I am just really happy for the guys and with the effort that they put into it that they got a win out of it.”

“I wasn’t surprised. Detroit got a break too. It was their sixth game on their trip. They came out a little bit soft defensively and that’s not how they normally play because they have been on the road. They tried to turn it up the second half and the thing I was worried about was Cuttino (Mobley) and Brad (Miller) were both out and if Mike (Bibby) and Peja (Stojakovic) were taken out, how were we going to score? We really moved the ball though and we had a good sense of what we are trying to do and I was just hoping this week that we could just kind of build on this. We have to find out who we are and how we are going to win as a team”

On Brian Skinner, Kenny Thomas and Corliss Williamson:
“They have been really solid. We knew what we were getting into with Corliss. We knew what type of guy he was and we knew he was going to give us stuff inside and he could play both forward positions. Kenny really looked like he relaxed today. He can really shoot the ball and he had a good sense of what we were doing.

Brian Skinner:
“It was rejuvenating being on the other side and not being on the opponent’s side. It felt really good to be out there and playing.”

“We tried to push the ball when we could. We tried to not let them get easy baskets. We tried to really focus on rebounds, and we did that as a team. We played defense as a team. The last two games, we had two losses because we weren’t playing defense. We played great team defense and we had a lot of energy and we just played unbelievably.”

“They (the Kings) pass the ball. It’s a passing offense. It makes it a lot easier, knowing that if you work hard and get open, you have an opportunity to get the ball and they have faith and trust in you to be able to score. It’s pretty complex, but it’s simple to figure out after a little while. We’ve just got get more repetitions in terms of how confident we are. I feel pretty confident.”

On playing in Philadelphia:
“When you sit in the sideline that long, the first thing you can’t do is doubt yourself. I think I had a great year last year, and I didn’t understand why I didn’t get to play these past 50 games. Coach (Adelman) put a lot of faith and trust in me, Brad has been on the sideline, and I think I’ve gone in and just tried to continue to be successful.”

“I’m getting used to the guys right now and I just love being here. It’s a great city, so far I love it.”

Kenny Thomas:
“I didn’t really know how they (the fans) were going to be. I was nervous before the game. It was our first home game (since the trade). I was really nervous, so I was just trying to come out and play hard and get some easy baskets.”

“I wanted to be here when I heard I was coming here. Fifteen minutes before midnight before the trade deadline, I got the phone call and I was really excited. The thing about being here is that they (the Kings team) all play basketball and they share the ball really well. I like this system a lot.”

“I was nervous so just being able to slow things down and then the ways the fans greeted me when I came in, that gave me a little bit of ease too. I was just trying to play basketball and knock down shots.”

“Mike (Bibby) told me to shoot the ball so I was open and I just started letting it go. I just got into a really good rhythm.”

“I’m kind of used to one person dribbling around all the time. It just feels really good to be here and get back to playing basketball and getting easy baskets.”

DETROIT PISTONS

Head Coach Larry Brown
“What happened was we got hurt on the pick and roll. So then you have guys scrambling around, but we didn’t come out with any kind of energy early. They executed great. [Kenny] Thomas and [Darius] Songaila at the power forward and I thought [Mike] Bibby really controlled the game in the first half. Tayshaun [Prince] did a great job on [Peja] Stojakovic, but in the second half, every time we made a run we just had some real bad decisions and some real bad shots and gave them life.”

“We shot badly from the free throw line, we took a lot of shots that I thought we could have had later on in the clock. We had about three or four breaks when we had a chance to take the lead and just didn’t get anything away and then took two horrible shots in the process. You can’t keep coming back and coming back on the road.”

“Right now I’m just disappointed in the way we played (today). Our bench got us back in, especially with Lindsay [Hunter] and Carlos [Arroyo]. You substitute and hope you gave some guys some rest. They saw how we got back in the game and then it [the lead] goes right back up. That was really disappointing.”

Forward Tayshaun Prince
“I wasn’t pleased going three and three on this trip. We gave the one in Phoenix away. It was a tough win in Seattle. I don’t think anybody got any rest. We still had a chance of winning, but hey, we lost that game. (Today) we played like we were ready to go home before the game started, so that’s all I have to say about today’s game.”

Guard Chauncey Billups
“I though Mo Evans was real great for them. He gave them a lot of energy he knocked down shots. They had a lot of guys just play really well. We let them have their way too easy and too early and those shots are a lot easier when there’s not much pressure.”

“We’ll be alright. We have a lot of home games. We have one road game in Boston, but we’ll be fine. We’re just looking forward to getting home.”

“Just the lack of communication hurt us.”

Forward Antonio McDyess
“We just couldn’t get over the hump. It’s very frustrating, especially when you’re just trying to give all you’ve got on the court. You fight [to get] back in it and you still come up short, it’s kind of tough to swallow.”

“It seems like we don’t have trust in each other right now. It seems like we’re starting back over from the beginning of the season when we were having losing streaks. Like the past three games, we’ve been kind of losing trust in each other and it seems like that wasn’t what we were doing when we were in a winning streak.”

The Inside Dish vs Detroit

http://www.nba.com/kings/news/The_Inside_Dishvs_Detroit-134581-58.html

by Devin Blankenship | March 2, 2005 | Kings @ Orlando

Responsive…
What can you say about the Kings on Sunday except that they responded?

They responded to the fact that they needed a win in the worst way after losing the last three games of their road trip.

They responded to the fact that they were playing the defending champions on national TV without starters Brad Miller and Cuttino Mobley.

And they responded every time the Pistons made a run at them during Sunday’s game, showing poise and playing with a defensive attitude not seen at ARCO in some time. The Kings did not panic when Detroit came out of the halftime break and scored the first seven points of the quarter, cutting the lead to two points. They responded with a 15-3 run to put them back in control.

Sacramento did a great job of shutting the Pistons down, contesting shots and keeping them off the glass. They outrebounded Detroit by one, and outshot them by 10%.

Running…
The time is of the essence for the Kings.

Sacramento has entered the point of its schedule where it needs to make a move, and if the team wants to position itself higher for the playoffs, they need to take advantage over the next two weeks.

Seven of the team’s next nine games are at ARCO, with the only two road games at Golden State and the Clippers. Now is the time for the Kings to start jelling and learning more than just each others’ names.

Random Thoughts...

  • Games like Sunday are what makes watching the Kings in person such a great experience. For those of you that have never gotten an opportunity, there really is nothing better than going to ARCO for an early Sunday game around this time of year, when the weather is great and the games really mean something. People tailgate in the parking lot, the smell of good food is in the air, and the sun is shining—it just doesn’t get any better. Of course a Kings’ W is always helpful.
  • Brian Skinner is proving on the court that he was not just a throw-in to the Chris Webber trade, playing impressive basketball over the last four games in the place of Brad Miller. Skinner’s defense and rebounding earned him a standing ovation from the ARCO crowd when he came off the floor in the fourth quarter.
  • The Kings had a bunch of shots blocked in the first half, but it was actually a good thing. It showed how the team was aggressively attacking the basket. Sometimes they got their shot thrown back in their face, but a lot of times they were successful. Either way, it was good to see.
  • There is a theory around the NBA about coming home after a long road trip. Usually that first game back is always the toughest to get into a rhythm, and the home teams have a tendency to struggle—not the Kings on Sunday.
  • It was weird walking into the Kings locker room before Sunday’s game for the first time since the Webber trade. Certain guys, like Vlade and Chris, had been in the same lockers for years—but with so many new faces the room had a strange vibe to it that took a while to get used to.
  • You can just tell how happy the guys from Philly are to be in the Kings' style of offense right now. If you need an example, just read any of their postgame quotes from the last week.
Kenny Thomas

His offense off the bench helped the Kings maintain a nine-point lead at the break. He finished the game with 19 points and 10 rebounds.

-Brian Skinner

Sacramento put the game away in the fourth quarter after a Mike Bibby steal and subsequent three-point bomb gave the Kings a 16-point lead and ignited the ARCO crowd into a frenzy.

FG %: Orlando 49.4%, Sacramento 39.1%

I'm glad to hear that he is understanding the offense so well and that he thinks with a little more practice the team will be more confident. We need more confidence.

Now if they can just get some kind of consistent defensive effort like we saw yesterday, it'll actually be even more fun to watch since the team will be winning alot of games.

That's the thing with this team, they played great in the face of adversity once again yesterday. They showed that yes they actually are capable of preventing "layup drills" as mentioned by the announcer. However, the defense was absolutley pathetic last week at Orlando and Miami. I realize that the injuries, lack of chemistry, and lack of practice time were factors. Now that they've shown the ability to play some respectable D, I expect this team to CONSISTENTLY put forth better defensive efforts. Hopefully this a good sign of things to come.
