Postgame Quotes-at Cleveland

rick_adelman.jpg
Kings Coach Rick Adelman
“This is a terrific win for us. In the first quarter, they jumped on us pretty good, but that second group was just great in the second quarter. They took the momentum away, they played hard, they played together at both ends of the court and they changed the game. We just knew they were going to make some kind of run. They started making all those threes. That’s when you’ve got to be efficient offensively. There were about 4 or 5 possessions where we let them cut it, but we responded. So, it’s a good win.”

“Oh yeah. They cut it to 9 (points) and I just kept telling our guys that you’ve just got to keep executing. As long as we scored and executed, they weren’t going to be able to catch us. Eventually they were going to start missing some shots. I mean, Gooden hit two threes and he only had two all year. Things like that happen in games. James is terrific. He’s just a terrific player and it’s dangerous when he has the ball in his hands. He causes so much havoc and he’s willing to give it up.”

“You couldn’t relax. They were playing at home and they put those shooters in the game and they started making shots. That’s what happens and you can’t relax and think it’s over with. This league is all about runs, and when you’re playing a team on the road and have a team with a guy like LeBron with the ball, they can score every time down the court. That’s why I wanted our guys to keep playing. We made one basket, then Mike (Bibby) made a huge three that put up 12 and that kind of broke their backs.”

“That second group that was on the floor deserved to stay in the game. They brought us back and they played extremely well. They just kept going. That’s what I told the guys (starters) at halftime; I hope you learned a lesson, now it’s your turn to go out there and control the third quarter. Our starters played better in the second half, but we’ve been doing that. We start the game and we’re not guarding anybody. I think they (Cavaliers) had 15 points at one point, and two came from jump shots and everything else was layups. We just have to understand that you can’t win on the road if you do that. We went to a zone and that kind of threw them off a little bit, at least for 5 or 6 minutes where it took them out of their rhythm. I think that really helped.”

“It’s usually pretty comfortable with our guys (starters), but in the last couple of games, we’ve been so poor in the first quarter and not coming out like we’re ready to play and play with urgency. I just felt that, I didn’t care if they would have cut that thing down to 10 points or 8 points, those guys (bench) deserved to play. Hopefully, it’s going to teach them a lesson. I told them before, this is a different team now. I’m trying to figure out what you’re all about, and if that’s the third straight game where we come out and give up 30 plus points, then that’s now what we need to be about.”

Mike Bibby:
“We played good tonight. We were kind of even in the first quarter, and the second group came in and jumped on them. That was good news. We just played good enough. They were running the ball more, trying to easier baskets and the flow can’t always come in the halfcourt sets.”

“Basketball is a game of runs and they had a run and we had to withstand it to some point. I was happy we came out with this win.”

cuttino_mobley.jpg
Cuttino Mobley:
“We went into a zone and they missed a couple of shots and we rebounded and got out on the fast break. We got a couple easy buckets and we pushed it up on them. That’s the story of the second quarter.”

“It was just play our game, move the ball and limit them to one shot and push it down their throat.”

CLEVELAND CAVALIERS

Head Coach Brendan Malone
“We came out, beat them in the first quarter. I believe it was by a point. We lost in the second quarter 41-19. Lost by one point in the third quarter and outscored them in the fourth quarter. We outscored them in the second half and what happened was that we didn’t stop anybody. Even in the first quarter when we were playing very good offense, we were trading baskets with them. The second quarter we didn’t rebound, we didn’t stop anybody. They were making great shots. They’re a very good shooting team. But we couldn’t stop anybody. Then when they did miss, those long rebounds and we just weren’t bringing them in. "

“I just decided that looking at us, the way we were playing, we would go small. Put Anderson (Varejao) at the five. Put Jiri (Welsch) in. Switch everything and try and scramble the game up. We cut a 31-point lead, and we cut it to nine points. Sasha (Pavlovic) had 17 (points). LeBron is LeBron. But I think the group of Anderson, (Drew) Gooden, Sasha, LeBron, and Jiri Welsch have a slightly different combination. It’s the exact same combination in New Orleans and they did it again. They came from behind. But we dug such a big hole that it was hard to dig out of that hole. (There were) a couple of momentum breakers on drives to the basket. I had to be proud of the guys that were out on the floor. I liked that the offense in the first quarter, we really executed. But maybe we showed the effects of playing four games in five nights tonight.”

LEBRON JAMES:
“They really couldn’t miss a shot. They are one of the best shooting teams in the league. We had had hands up in their faces. They had a few easy buckets, but we were contesting shots and they were still making them.”
“I’m going to try my best to try to not let them give up. We can see a lot of teams chasing us, but we are still in the playoffs at this point. I’m going to do what I have to do to put this team on my back and get to the playoffs.”

“We have to come out with a mindset that we are going to play defense. If we can do that, then we can stay out of those deficits like that and try to win ballgames.”

Bactene…
Call that win a rinse.

A rinse from the bad taste that Wednesday’s loss to the Pistons left in all of the Kings’ mouths. As bad as they looked in Detroit, Sacramento looked just the opposite in Cleveland.

The Kings absolutely blitzed the Cavs in the second quarter of Friday’s game, outscoring them 41-19 to open up a 21-point halftime lead that had the Cleveland faithful booing the home team. Sac didn’t let off in the third quarter either, at one point pushing the lead up to 31-points thanks to some unconscious shooting, before letting off the throttle in the fourth quarter.

The win not only was a rinse of the bad taste from Wednesday, but a nice boost for the rest of the road games this season. Sacramento has really struggled to win on the road since making its big trade in February, something they will have to relearn how to do, hopefully by the playoffs.

Bench Play…
Sacramento’s depth really played a difference in the win.

Cleveland was coming off an overtime loss to Chicago last night, and their legs looked tired when the Kings sent in their reserves in the second period—at one point the Kings bench had outrebounded the Cavs, 13-1, in the quarter.

It was enough to keep Rick Adelman from sending in his starters for the rest of the half, giving guys like Peja Stojakovic and Mike Bibby ample time to rest.

Random Thoughs…

**Sacramento’s small line-up actually found an opponent that it could match up favorably with. Detroit hammered the Kings inside when Sacramento went with Kenny Thomas, Darius Songaila, and Peja Stojakovic on the front line, but when Zydrunas Ilgaukas was benched in the second half, the Kings were able to matchup well with Cleveland’s small team.

**You know that whenever you get a big lead like the one Sacramento had in the second quarter, the key to maintaining it is coming out of the halftime break with energy and not letting the opponent get right back into the game—because that usually sets up a dogfight in the fourth quarter. Sacramento did a great job of pushing their lead out in the third though, so that by the time the Cavs made their run the fourth quarter it was just too late.

**How often do you see a team shoot over 50% from the field and get whipped? The Cavs were down by 30 points in third quarter but still hitting half their shots. Crazy…

**The next week is so important. If Sacramento can beat the Timberwolves on Sunday, they have the banged up Sonics at home, followed by games against the struggling Trail Blazers and Lakers. The Kings can really make a move here.

**Mike Bibby is so clutch. Seriously, who in the NBA would you rather have talking big shots? When it looked like Cleveland was making a run in the fourth quarter, Bibby stifled them every time with a big shot.

**Was it me, or did the big Z just look like he didn’t really want to play that much?

Mike Bibby

Really the whole Kings’ bench should go here, but Mike made some big shots in the end.

Mike Bibby’s bomb with three and a half minutes to go in the game ended a frantic Cavs run in which they had cut the Kings lead down to nine points, and gave the Kings some breathing room

2 good points right there^. #1-"IF" the Kings can play with some consistancy here they could win a few in a row. Thats a big "IF" though. #2-Mike Bibby has to be one of the most clutch players in the NBA, it was so predictable what happened at the end of that game.

Yep...just score in 4th. That's all Kings needed to do to win the game! :D
