Indiana swingman Jackson suspended again

NEW YORK -- A little over a week after his return from a 30-game suspension, Indiana Pacers swingman Stephen Jackson will be on the sidelines again.

NBA senior vice president of basketball operations Stu Jackson announced Thursday that Jackson has been suspended one game without pay for verbal abuse of an official.

Jackson will serve his suspension during Friday's game against Dallas.

The incident occurred after Wednesday's 97-96 loss to the Toronto Raptors in which Jackson's sloppy defense cost the Pacers the win.

With 1.9 seconds left, the Raptors ran a play for Jalen Rose, who curled around the top of the key and leaned into Jackson, who could not move his feet quick enough and committed the foul.

Rose sank both free throws to lift Toronto to just its fourth road win in 24 games this season. Without any timeouts, Indiana had to attempt a long inbounds pass that was deflected away as time expired.

Jackson was curt and testy after the game. He berated the media for asking about the team's recent woes and the call at the end of the game.

"Why do you ask those dumb questions? Are you trying to get me fined? Don't you think we've been fined enough?" Jackson said. "No more questions about calls, and that goes for all of you."

Known for his fiery personality, Jackson was suspended for his role in the brawl at Detroit on November 19. Since his return on January 26, the Pacers are 0-5.

*****

If the playoff started today, they won't even be in it. And Grant Hill beated Jermaine O'Neal by 65,000 votes to start in the All-Star game.

Tough to be a Pacers' fan right now.

Vince Carter is more popular (at least by the votes) than Jermaine. Maybe the coaches can vote Jermaine into the All Star game.

O'Neal did something wrong, received his punishment, and can only move on. His punishment was a suspension, not to be shunned from league activities later on. He deserves to be on the all-star team, and he will. I wish he wouldn't be though because I'd rather he take the time off to rest.

As for Jackson, this is clearly because he's under the microscope post-brawl. This is something you usually fine a player for, not suspend.

Fifteen games for acting like a junior higher and punching a fan in the face was a pathetic punishment. His actions, along with a few others from the Pacers and Pistons make me embarrassed to say I love the NBA.
Since JO was a participating part (very negative part) of the incident that has scarred the NBA this season (and for seasons to come), he should not be celebrated as one of the brightspots in the NBA this season.

Agreed.

I also find the report itself pretty slanted.

How many times have we defended our players from biased and not-necessarily-true snipes from the media?

The account sounds like Rose outmaneuvered Jackson and that doesn't surprise me. Jalen is tricky. ;)

The incident he's been suspended for happened AFTER the game. It sounds to me, although I don't claim to have all the facts, that he might well have been goaded into saying something he really didn't mean to say.

I'd suspend the media, but maybe that's just me.

I agree also.

I don't want to re-hash that unfortunate event, so I'll just say: Any one who uses that event as a reason for not liking the NBA has other issues.

I agree with that.

Kenny Smith deserves to be an All-Star over Vince, and he's not even in the league anymore. The fans really have to get over their love of Vince Carter, because it all stems from his Dunk Contest perfomance nearly 5 years ago. He hasn't been a worthy All-Star since then.
