Pacers Donate $2.4 Million to Local Charities

Pacers News Release | Feb. 10, 2005 The Indiana Pacers announced Thursday a pledge of $2.4 million to 11 local charitable organizations that emphasize helping youth.

The money was derived from fines levied against five suspended Pacers players from the Nov. 19 game with the Detroit Pistons in Auburn Hills, Mich. Those players were suspended with their salary from games missed serving as fines. Those fines are sent to the National Basketball Association, which in turn donates the money to charity. In this case, the NBA allowed a percentage to come back to the Pacers to give to local charities. In addition, the Pacers voluntarily made a contribution for the final figure.

“While the incident in Auburn Hills is regrettable, we’re pleased that some good can come out of this with the fine money being funneled back into our community,” said Pacers’ co-owner Herb Simon. “All of these organizations are deserving and I hope these pledges are remembered in a positive way. We had the support of our players, the NBA and the National Basketball Players Association in making sure this money went to local charities.”

The recipients are: United Way of Central Indiana; Indiana Black Expo, Inc.; Riley Hospital for Children; Methodist Children’s Pavilion; St.Vincent Children’s Hospital; Indianapolis Public Schools; Indianapolis Parks Foundation; Peace Learning Center; Special Olympics Indiana; Indianapolis Ten Point Coalition and the Arts Council of Indianapolis. United Way of Central Indiana received $1 million, which will spread the money to its many youth-serving agencies.

Walsh“All of these organizations were chosen for their commitment and help to youth in Indiana,” said Pacers Sports & Entertainment Chief Executive Officer and President Donnie Walsh. “Between Pacers Foundation and Simon Youth Foundation, our ownership and this franchise have had a long-standing tradition in aiding programs that specifically target youth. The phrase gets overused that they are our future, but it’s the truth. By helping the youth today, it will help Indianapolis and Indiana be strong in the future.”
