P.J. Carlesimo Anyone?

yes, PJ is the next best option

I would say PJ and retain Scott Brooks as an assitant. I just wouldn't feel right having Rambis as coach since he will always be thought of as a laker.

In Order:

PJ
Brooks
Ellie
Porter
Rambis
Shaw

Who cares if he was a laker or worked for them...you act like he'll just sabatoge our team.

If he's the best out there for our job then we sign him up and that's all there is to it.

forget his track record before the spurs. any assistant nba coach with 3 championship rings is a better candidate than anyone else whose name has been mentioned...

So by your assumption Kurt Rambis should be the ideal candidate. 4 rings as a player and 3 as an Assistant Coach....that trumps Carlisemo by far.

Rambis and Carlisemo both got their rings by riding the coattails of Hall of Famers and future Hall of Famers.

because Rambis ISN'T the best out there, PJ is in my opinion. This is America isn't it, I can have an opinion can't I? People on this board get so defensive if you don't agree with them? Big Deal you think Rambis is better, good for you, maybe he is. I am a Kings fan, so I will agree with who Petrie picks whoever it ends up being.

I just wish PJ fans could do a better job articulating WHY they think he's such a great option. I mean, a couple of years on a bench with a coach who won a championship doesn't differentiate him at all from Rambis and Shaw. I really want to understand why people think PJ is such a great candidate.

Well said. Every "strength" that PJ has, other available candidates are stronger.

Experience - Carlisle has more experiece and is actually a winner
Assistant Coach on a Title team under a HOF coach - Rambis ties him here with 3 rings
Player - Rambis and Shaw are ex-players who have won
Knows how to manage egos - Everyone else is better at that

I'm honestly asking. What is unique about PJ that makes him people's #1 choice?

Under that theory, than any of the Rambis/Shaw type candidates can say at least as much, but without the looming personality issues and proven track record of failure.

We can NOT afford to have another coach who rubs the players the wrong way. It would be disaster to an already fractured locker room. And actually may be precisely why he will not get a look -- the Maloofs said the ont thing they were focused more on this year was personality and how he would mesh with players. With a guy with Carlesimo's history, how could you ever take a gamble on that?

I guess Pop took the "gamble", didn't he? After all, if the guy is so incorrigible, how could you possibly want him for an assistant coaching position? Unless you think Pop has him walking around with a muzzle at practice, and that PJ has no interaction with the other players other than to say to them exactly what Pop tells him to say. But Pop doesn't strike me as that kind of guy. I think Pop thinks he's a good coach. He didn't hire him as a charity case, that's for sure.

I hope they hire him, not only because he's a good coach, not only because he has coached an NBA Champion, but because it sends a message that we want character on this team, not "characters". See ya Artest. See ya Kenny Thomas. This team has a lousy feel to it - selfish players, lazy players, nutcase players. It's time to change the culture, not to adapt to the culture.

I really think in the interest of free agents we need a more player friendly coach than PJ. Perhaps it's a small consideration, but we're still a small small market with limited opportunities for young millionaires to spend their money. We have been a destination of choice recently because we were a winning team... that won't be a draw for us anymore after this season. If we combine being a bad team with a noted player UNfriendly coach like PJ, being able to sign free agents will be like it was before the Vlade/CWebb/JWill offseason. Essentially we will wind up having to VASTLY overpay for similar talent and hope to get extremely lucky until we are a contender again.

Mostly hiring a coach known to not get along with his players will just make the rebuild that much harder IMO

Well, if you don't want a fractured lockeroom, then you better tell Petrie to stop trading for guys like Artest and Thomas. I think it starts at the top. PJ definitely would not mix well with either one, which gives PJ a zillion points in my book. Change the players, change the culture, hire PJ!!!!

personally i think your just wrong about what a good coach should do for a team. do you think riley or jackson would be worried about bringing in Artest, warts and all? as a coach you have to balance being a disciplinarian and being a buddy, and by most accounts hes just too much of the former.
