Original Arco Arena site being evacuated

As I'm typing this, I am currently watching KCRA-TV (Channel 3) news coverage of this breaking news.

The California Department of Consumer Affairs building on North Market Street in the Natomas region have been evacuated because of a bomb scare.

I am mentioning it here because there is a Sacramento Kings connection to this story: the building was the site of the original Arco Arena, where the Kings first played when they moved here in 1985. They moved to the present Arco Arena site in 1988.

Bomb scare turns out to be false alarm

The bomb scare that emptied the state Department of Consumer Affairs building in Natomas has ended, with officials saying it stemmed from a worker accidentally dropping an electronic device in a mail cart and another thinking it was a ticking bomb.

The building was evacuated at about 11 a.m. when someone heard ticking inside a mail cart, California Highway Patrol spokeswoman Lizz Dutton said.

The cart was pushed out into a parking lot and bomb squad teams using remote cameras inspected the cart, then finally used a water rifle to fire into the cart.

The result? The bomb squad found an electronic scanning device -- the type used to scan arriving Fed Ex or UPS packages -- had accidentally been dropped into the cart. Once there, it apparently had one of its buttons pushed by packages in the cart, and began making a noise that someone feared was a ticking bomb, Dutton said.

By the time the all-clear had sounded before 2 p.m., workers were left to return to their offices.
