I saw the two Summer League games on NBA TV, and Kevin Martin did not impress me. Ugly jumper, poor handles. I don't like his floor game one bit. Just a one-dimensional player. Great athlete, great hops, OK mid range game, but I do not like his passive approach and his casual demeanor. Usually something like that does not improve with time. I just do not envision him as part of a core group that can go deep into the playoffs.
Now, the exact opposite can be said for Cisco Garcia. This guy has a SWEET stroke, out to three-point range. He didn't connect as much as he would have liked, but a nice shooter. What really impressed me was his ball-handling and his defense intensity. Nice crossover, and when he gets into the lane he shuffles it off with his left hand. Time and time again, he always found the open man, set him up for an easy look, just makes the easy pass. Finishes strong at the hoop. Not afraid to challenge big guys. Can definitely play spot minutes at the point.
Also, on defense he was VERY quick to slide down and help out on post defense. Just what we need. Swiped at the ball with quick hands. Good overall intensity at all times, good court awareness. If I had to liken him to one player in the NBA right now, and I have NBA League Pass so I see a lot of action, I would compare him to a younger version of Brent Barry of the Spurs....that kind of length and court sense.
Anyway, it would not surprise me to see Kevin Martin packaged with another player(s) to get us more length along the front-line. One name I have not heard on this board is Chris Anderson of New Orleans, formerly of the Nuggets. He is a restricted FA and suppose to re-sign, but with Geoff Petrie, maybe there is hope. This guy can jump out of the gym. Not a physical defender, but a very good help defender, covers a lot of ground, just what we need to cover up the lapses of Bibby, Peja, et. al.
