In my mind, NBA owners are crazy for not selling tickets for whatever it takes to fill the arena. Build fan loyalty during tough times and fans will stick around in better times at higher prices. Plus, it's tough to sell a jersey or a hot dog and beer to a fan who isn't there.
If NBA owners don't wise up and realize they are competing for a finite entertainment dollar and allow their fans to shift to other less expensive entertainment opportunities during the recession, they're crazy. It will take millions of dollars and many years to win those fans back. Why not invest now to preserve their base?
Many industries use this model. It's time for the NBA to get rid of their old, outdated marketing mindset.
