Kings coach Musselman nabbed in DUI arrest

First-year Kings coach Eric Musselman was arrested early Saturday on suspicion of driving under the influence, authorities said.
Musselman was arrested on K Street in midtown Sacramento around 2:15 a.m. after cutting off another motorist, according to officer Jasper Begay, a California Highway Patrol spokesman. Musselman, who had coached the Kings to a 112-96 victory over the Utah Jazz on Friday night, his first game at Arco Arena, failed a field sobriety test and had a blood alcohol level above the legal limit of .08 percent, Begay said.
It is unclear where Musselman was in the hours between the end of the exhibition game and his arrest.
In a statement released Saturday, Kings president of basketball operations Geoff Petrie said, "I received a phone call from Eric at approximately 6 a.m. this morning, notifying me that he was arrested and charged with a DUI violation. He was very apologetic and ashamed for the lack of discretion leading to this situation.
"On behalf of the Kings organization, we are very disappointed in the poor personal behavior which precipitated this incident. We also believe Eric will face this adversity honestly and appropriately. Eric will be available to talk to the media prior to Sunday morning's practice."
Musselman was driving with three passengers -- two women and one man -- when he made a right turn onto K Street from Alhambra Boulevard, Begay said. The officer did not know who the passengers were.
Soon after turning on to K, Musselman allegedly cut off another driver and was pulled over by a CHP patrol officer near the Capital City Freeway underpass, Begay said.
The officer "smelled the odor of alcohol coming from the vehicle" and "observed objective signs of intoxication" from Musselman, Begay said. The coach was asked to step out of the vehicle and failed a field sobriety test, Begay said.
He was taken into custody and was booked into the Sacramento County Jail at 3:14 a.m., Begay said.
"Unfortunately he made the wrong choice and got behind the wheel of a car and got arrested," Begay said.
Musselman, a former Golden State Warriors coach and Memphis Grizzlies assistant, was hired in June to replace longtime coach Rick Adelman, who guided Sacramento to eight consecutive playoffs.
