HOUSTON -- The Monarchs lost point guard Ticha Penicheiro before the game, they lost center Yolanda Griffith early in the fourth quarter and they the game to the Houston Comets.
The Monarchs fell 83-75 Friday night at the Toyota Center.
"We're a bit road weary," coach Jenny Boucek said of her Monarchs' fourth game in a row away from home. "Our players played hard. We just didn't have enough gas."
Boucek said that showed most in Sacramento's defense, which allowed Houston to shoot 47.5 percent.
In contrast, the Monarchs (17-13) made only 34.8 percent.
"We've really struggled shooting the ball on this road trip, except for the Connecticut game," said guard Kara Lawson, who was un-Lawson like -- 3 of 9 from the field on her way to 14 points. "We're getting good shots."
Nicole Powell opened the game with a three-pointer for Sacramento, but she shot just 3 for 13 the rest of the game and scored 13 points.
"I had some good looks tonight," she said.
The Monarchs missed the easy shots more than the hard ones. They were 8 for 13 from beyond the arc, but a pitiful 16 for 56 from closer range.
"I don't know why we're missing so many layups as veterans," Powell said.
Griffith left with a right knee injury with 8:50 remaining in the game after scoring 10 points. Sacramento trailed 58-57 at that point.
Seconds later, the Monarchs had a chance to take the lead for the first time since the first quarter, but Adrian Williams missed a bad shot, one of Sacramento's few poor attempts of the night.
Houston's Tina Thompson (25 points) threw in a long three-pointer at the other end for a four-point lead and Sacramento never recovered. The Comets (11-19), who had lost their two previous meetings with the Monarchs this season, made 24 of 29 free throws to keep Sacramento from making another run.
Penicheiro, who pulled a hamstring in the first half of Thursday's loss in San Antonio, tried to warm up before Friday's game, but couldn't go. She missed her first start since the 2005 season. "Ticha's one of the top perimeter defenders in the league," Boucek said. "That's where we really missed her tonight."
Kristin Haynie made her first start of the season in place of Penicheiro.
Haynie, who had played more than 20 minutes only once this season, contributed seven points.
"I wasn't nervous," she said. "I played in the (national) championship game at Michigan State. I'm ready whenever they call my name."
The problem is the banged-up Monarchs play three games in six days, beginning Sunday at home against Washington. San Antonio and Phoenix, the two teams they are chasing in the Western Conference, come to town next.
Penicheiro and Griffith, who was diagnosed after the game with a hyperextended knee, are both day-to-day heading into the final week of the regular season.
"It's the time of the year," Lawson said of the numerous injuries around the league. "Everyone can complain about something. The strength of our team is our depth."

Not as scary as it was looking last night, but still not best case scenario. We'll see what happens....
