Monarchs All-Star forward Rebekkah Brunson was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence early Thursday morning in Sacramento. She was booked into Sacramento County Jail and later released.
"I am very embarrassed and ashamed and I am well aware of the seriousness of the situation," Brunson said in a statement released by the team.
Brunson, 25, is coming off her best season in her four-year WNBA career. She finished second in voting for the WNBA's Most Improved Player after averaging 11.5 points and 8.9 rebounds per game in 2007. She is currently a restricted free agent.
Brunson also played for the U.S. women's basketball team which qualified last month for the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics by winning the FIB America's tournament in Valdivia, Chile. However, the national team released its roster Thursday for an upcoming tournament in Russia and Brunson was left off the squad.
"We've communicated our deep disappointment to Rebekkah regarding the poor personal judgment which allowed this incident to occur, and we take this very seriously," Monarchs general manager John Whisenant said in the team release.
Brunson could be punished by the WNBA. In August, the league suspended Detroit's Kara Braxton without pay for two games after she pleaded no contest to DUI from a Sept. 25, 2006, arrest.
