Shortly after the NBA's free agency season began Saturday, the Cavaliers contacted James to offer him a five-year maximum contract extension worth about $80 million, a deal that could keep him in Cleveland through the 2012-13 season.

Jason Terry has been saying for weeks that his goal in free agency is to stay in Dallas. Thing is, wary Mavericks fans remember Steve Nash saying the same things two years ago before he was swept away by the Phoenix Suns.
Mavs owner Mark Cuban vows things will be different this time around.
Cuban said he plans to make Terry an offer as soon as free agency begins at 12:01 p.m. ET Saturday. A quick resolution would enable club officials to get on with the next phase of their offseason plans: signing Dirk Nowitzki and Josh Howard to contract extensions.

Clifford Robinson and the Nets have reached a tentative agreement on a new contract that will keep the troubled forward in New Jersey for another season, agent Brad Marshall said Friday.

Earlier in the day, the Nets complied with an NBA deadline and announced that they had declined to exercise a $2.5 million option on Robinson's existing contract.
That made Robinson a free agent and gave the two sides a chance to work out a new deal for Robinson, who damaged the team's playoff chances six weeks ago when he was suspended for five games during the Eastern Conference semifinals against the Miami Heat for violating terms of the NBA's drug policy.
Marshall refused to disclose terms of the new contract, which he characterized as all but done. He said that the 39-year-old Robinson would be paid about $2.5 million, the same amount he made last season, when he averaged 6.9 points and 3.3 rebounds in 80 games.
New Jersey also waived forward Scott Padgett, who saw very little playing time in the postseason.

The Miami Heat picked up reserve guard Jason Kapono's $1.1 million contract for next season Friday, one day before he would have become a free agent.
