For those who haven't heard yet, LaToya Bond was cut, the day after the preseason loss to Seattle last Friday. Sorry, LaToya, but five turnovers in 17 minutes ain't gonna get you into the Monarchs roster this year. :(

(Box score of the loss to Seattle):

And here's the boxscore of last night's preseason win over Phoenix.

http://www.wnba.com/games/20070513/PHOSAC/boxscore.html

BTW, I see that Scholanda has changed her name again. During the game, she was introduced as Scholanda Robinson. But the boxscore has her as "Richardson".

First, when she was drafted last year, she was Hoston, and then became Dorrell during the season. This year alone, she became Robinson, and now she's Richardson? What's up with all those name changes? Is she on the Federal Witness Protection Program? :)

So, which Monarch will be cut in the next few days? Brittany Wilkins? Antoinette Wells? Erin Batth? La'Tangela Atkinson? Kim Smith?

Based on what I saw last night it is Erin Batth and LaTangela Atkinson. I know Batth is just an emergency fill in so that is obvious. But I did not see much out of Atkinson's game. But I will tell you what I did like from last night's game:

1. Although the coach has changed, the defensive intensity remains the same. The second half defense was outstanding.

2. I love Adrian Williams. She does not have a lot of polish on the offensive end, but man can she rebound. She will be a very capable replacement to Buchsler.

3. Was it just me or did it seem like Haynie was kicking the ball all over the gym? She did calm down and hit a big three down the stretch.

4. My and Mrs. Purple Reign's theme of the night was "You Are What You Are". Powell and Lawson are shooters and showed that they can shoot in their sleep, and Ticha is not and I am not going to beg her to shoot or score or nothing. Just run the offense, play defense and what happens happens.

5. The Monarchs backcourt of Ticha, Kara, Chelsea (Welcome Back) and Haynie is set and solid. You can see what we missed last year in not having Newton. She is our "Nolan Stopper". She plays with energy out on the perimeter that we did not have last year.

AND LAST BUT CERTAINLY NOT LEAST......My favorite of the night was Rebekkah Brunson who is in mid-season form!!!! The Mercury had no answer for her down in the post. They doubled and even sometimes tripled teamed her, and her last bucket and one of the night with less than a minute left in the game sealed the deal. What I love about Rebekkah is that although she will be coming off of the bench this season AGAIN!!!, she does not complain, she just comes in and does her job. i can see her playing even more significant minutes this season as Yo begins to wind down her Hall of Fame career.

It was nice to be in Arco again.....
I agree with Purple's assessments. However......I still hate the "pass to death" offense. Nicole and Kara passed up a ton of open shots, yet again. I know it's preseason and all, but c'mon. They did have a couple of good passing plays. And Nicole has some major power passes! It reminded me of the Doug Christie to Peja types of passes.

Great to have Chelsea back. She really moved.

The one I thought would play a little better was Brittney. She dropped a bunch of passes. Not impressed.

Adrian - yes....she's got a nice reach, and it was good to have her in the mix.

Brunson!!! She had some good put backs. And she muscled her way around the paint. Glad she's back.

Scholanda has improved as well. She's learned a bunch from Chelsea. She's quick and that's a good sign.

Haynie looked stronger too. She was more aggressive than I've seen her be. I'm happy about that.

Phoenix was scrappy. It was nice to see Tangela, she was my favorite player for a long time.

I agree. The team looks like it's coming along....hope becky gets an even bigger breakout year this year. Nicole and Kara just keep on being themselves and open up the floor. They are 2 of the best in 3's and having them both on the floor is a nightmare for any defense.

I think Haynie showed another development last night when she made crucial plays down the stretch (a three, an assist for a three, and a crucial steal). I think she is beginning to show some maturity in running the team.

Haynie and Ticha had 4 TO's each though.

Sorry I am late to the commentary....

I pretty much agree with PR's assessment but since I went thru the trouble of writing my Thoughts on the game and the team Here we go.

The team is "Coming along" I guess. There are a few things missing for me to feel truly comfortable with this bunch. Perhaps it is the fact that everyone is coming in late, but there seems to be a lack of togetherness. Not in a selfish way. Again perhaps a few practices will correct this.

It is hard not to compare every team to the 05 ball club. But since I am about to, The one thing about that club was there was a buzz in the air from Day one. You could smell it soon as you walked into Arco. I am not quite feeling that yet, but I look forward to. And maybe it is still too early.

For last night game, It was good to see this team come back and beat Phoenix. Showed poise and that is a good start.

Grades IMO.

Rebekkah Brunson-Very Solid game. rarely got beat on Defense. Converted every assist opportunity, made game winning shot in impressive fashion. Still trying to tip the ball in rather than grab rebounds but Solid game.

A

Chelsea Newton- Very balanced Attack- She it jump shots, attacked the baskets off the dribble with authority. 2 really nice assist. Defense which she is known for was okay. Could have been better but a balanced attack is a Definate bonus.

A-

Kristen Haynie-
Good game, Very Good Game. Ran offense well, Knew what she wanted to do. Nice shots, frisky on Defense. Much improved, and game has matured. Not sure if she is ready to challenge for job changes yet but Definite progress. Would have gotten an A but the T.O. hurt that. Who was that annoying point guard for Phoenix anyway.

B+

Kara Lawson
Decent on Defense but got caught on a few screens baseline. Offense was Decent too, lot of shots miss... too many. but she was aggressive. And that is what we pay her for. Like the new up-fake power dribble shot.

B

Sholanda Robinson

Or Richardson.. What ever her name is. (See box score)
Good on defense, left her feet a few time and got beat. Couple of nice drives to the basket. Creative off the dribble. Not bad but could have been better

B

Adrian Williams-

Welcome to Sacramento... Effective night. 8 point 12 rebounds however i suspect she was credited with some of Kristen/Ticha's rebounds. That is exactly what we need from her. If she can give us 8 and 5 on a regular basis, I would say she is worth her weight in Salary cap space. She did get beat a few too many times but a good night for the newbie

B-

Ticha P

Not a great night but not a bad one either.
I think she was 1-2 from the field. Missed a free throw at the end of the game, but my un-official count had me at 6 rebounds for her. Just can't overlook that. Plus 2 really nice assist. She did have some T.O. but good far outweighed bad.

B-

Nicole Powell

Got beat by Leah Rush and Belinda Snell way too many times and For Goodness Sakes Nicole take the Shot. She would have got an F for passing the ball with less than 5 seconds on the shot clock, but she did hit a few jumpers. Still should have played better but she did just get back.

C+

Erin Batth and Antoinette Wells-

They actually played pretty decently. Batth had a sound game, and I like her style. Sad to see her leave. Kudos to Jen-ney for letting her Start.

Wells played so hard and worked her butt off. You could see the improvement just not enough yet. Keep on working kid. Sad to see them both go.

Now for the "SEE ME LIST"

You know the one when you turn in a homework assignment and the Teacher Writes "SEE ME"

I am gonna try and be nice.

Tangie Atkinson
She really struggled 4 T.O.'s never got a shot up. We did see her in the open practice so I know she is capable of shooting and dribbling but, Last night was a real struggle for her. It is kinda hard to judge what she can do yet. She seems like she can defend, and she did defend a few times...I expect better.

D- SEE ME

Brittany Wilkins-

Very lack luster performance. Tangie #50 beat up on her pretty bad. Yes Tangie is an All-Star but DAMN. Dropped 2 assist that I can think of. 0-2 from the field and 3-6 from the ft line. Just not a very good showing. And I really like this kid personally. I had hoped for a bigger improvement from her. Perhaps she will improve during the season. especially sine she is auditioning for the Victory Cigar position.

D- Sit in the corner

Kim Smith

0-3 from the field, didn't turn the ball over and got to assist. I can say that much for her. But she looks like she did nothing to improve her game this off-season. And this is a 1st round pick. Stagnation is death in this league.

F

IMO those 3 I am the most concerned about, and they are gonna make the team anyway. I do see some hope for Tangie. At least we better.

As it stands right now I wouldn't keep any of these 3. I would move Chelsea to play the 3 when Nicole needs a breather. And I think that could work out pretty well for us. I would like to be able to have a 5th post player that we can activate to play when/if Yo wants/needs to take a game off. As it stands, I am not even comfortable with giving Brittany 5 minutes, and I don't want to have Nicole playing post again. If Nicole has to rotate into the post why bother keeping Brittany, just because we have the roster space?

Like I said, Tangie has shown some defensive prowess so maybe MAYBE we can work that out. I do not foresee Kim Smith beating Tangie out for the for the 11th roster active roster spot. And the argument was that she hasn't got a chance to show us anything. But I would wash this pick at this point.

If it seems like I am being hard on Brit and Kim Smith, Well I am. They have spent a year here. They know what the expectations are here. And last I checked they were on the bench when we fell to Detroit. To Britt's credit she has improved her body, but there is little to no improvement for Smith.

If I am Whiz, and Seattle waives Barbara Turner, I give her a serious look. It is not like the team has gelled yet. 4 players just got here and DeMya arrived today. Of course I have a serious Kristen Newlin jones going. And she just got waived but Houston. I know people are on the Brooke Smith Bandwagon. Bottom line. Newlin is a better Pro type post. And believe me she can do a pretty good Lauren Jackson Imitation.

It would be interesting if things got shaken up.

There are my thoughts. Can you smell the rubber burning???

Why wouldn't she come off the bench? I mean, I admit that I don't really keep up with the Monarchs during their off-season, but last I checked, there are still two players better than her starting at the two positions she can play.

The reason why is that neither of those two players were in the game. Yo didn't play and DeMya hadn't arrived yet. She didn't start because she barely got there herself.

I do Imagine Bekkah will have a chance to start a few at some point this season.

Ditto on what Slim said...Bekkah's on the bench because of depth reasons and because she hasn't played herself off it yet. I seem to recall her having a starting job last year and it turning into an Erin Buescher MIP and DeMya's accelerated return. She should see more minutes, but no reason to be miffed that she's not starting.

I'm going to suggest grading across the course of the weekend instead of based on one game. What stood out for me in the preseason game I had visual on was that Haynie looked better than she did last season on both ends of the floor. Ticha I thought for someone who rolled off a plane from Russia (doubt it was a direct flight too) got in one practice and then hit the rotation, she wasn't that bad. The turnovers from her and Haynie I thought had more to do with introducing new people (in Ticha's case it was HER and OTHER new people :)) into the mix. I don't believe Williams practiced when she got to Sacramento, she sat in Seattle for precautionary reasons. So while Saturday's practice was a reunion of sorts, it also was a "how do we fit into this offense" workshop.

Powell had a fantastic game in limited minutes on Friday, so her overall grade should get a bump. I join the disappointment that the "I'd rather pass the ball than shoot" Powell reared her head, overall she was cool.

LaTangela, the dribbling was a weird problem. Sorta like Bekkah's ability to hit point blank shots after opening day. It got to the point that I was kinda hoping she wouldn't have to touch the ball for a while or if she did have to touch it that she wouldn't have to dribble it. But coach got to her quickly before she could get down, and I give coach tremendous kudos for that. I guess I'm basing my INC grade on her on her torching us in the game we played in Indy last season and from what I saw of her as a collegian. We had no answer for her or Tan White that day. I believe it may have been a day we didn't even have to contend with Catchings and still had a rough time. With the Lady Tarheels- that team the last 4 or so years was built to run, defend, rebound, run, defend, and perhaps I'll add run to that list. LaTangela essentially unselfishly did the dirty work on that team. LaTangela is a defender who you perhaps will also get some scoring from too, sorta like Chelsea circa 2005. LaTangela had 4pts 3rebs and a steal in 11minutes (3 turnovers) against Seattle. If you reduce the turnovers next week, I'm kinda cool with those numbers for now.

Kim Smith...she looked better in the open practice. If you want to compare effectiveness, Smith was part of the group on the floor when the Monarchs made their final run at Phx in the 4th, she was subbed out when they had reduced the deficit to 3. She still doesn't do anything to make you notice her, but she doesn't really hurt you when she's in the game most of the time, and I thought during the charge the Monarchs made to take over that game on Sunday, she grabbed an important rebound. Her numbers in the Phx game were similar to Robinson's and Wells, except both of them scored and Smith didn't have a turnover. The difference was that Smith was on the floor during the drive to overtake Phx. Since she wasn't scoring, I'm guessing she was defensively effective.

Somebody's going to join Brittney on the bench in street clothes out of the Smith and Atkinson duo (I have a hard time thinking a guard will sit). So they'll get an opportunity to improve rotating on and off the practice squad.

All in all, I walked away from ARCO on Sunday giddy as all get out because the game was exciting, the game allowed coach to actually "coach" a close tight game instead of the 4th quarter Seattle shooting practice the game on Friday became. And I DEFINITELY could see a marked improvement from the team from half to half and their executive defensively and offensively got better by about the middle of the 3rd q. Had they gotten blown out, I might be wringing my hands a lil bit more than I am. They've got a lotta work to do between now and Saturday, but I at least saw that they could figure out how to put some things together quickly, hopefully they can build on that.
