Mavs trade for Van Horn

Doesn't make a whole lot of sense for Dallas. They needed a suitable backup for Dirk, but I'm sure they could have found one a lot cheaper than KVH who will make 16 mil next year.

Van Horn's huge contract will be expiring this Summer, so even if he doesn't work out (something I doubt, because KVH has the perfect skill set to thrive in the Nelson offense), he will be a great, movable trade asset for my Mavs.

We essentially gave away roster detritus for a starting caliber, near-star level player, who fills the one on-court need of my Mavs (a credible back up for Dirk), and who possesses a very valuable expiring, large contract. This is a masterful trade, and stands as evidence that Donnie Nelson may just be the best horse trading GM in the NBA today...

If nothing else, this trade guarantees that my Mavs will be in the midst of all major trade talks again this Summer. Donnie always wants more ammunition for future deals, and just as Donnie aquired Juwan Howard and Antoine Walker for their soon expiring contracts, Donnie is looking two steps ahead here and is certainly thinking about the possibility of using the Van Horn contract to buy us into yet another big trade sometime during the next two offseasons (assuming we don't want to keep Van Horn).

Also, as I said on that huge Webber trade thread last night, I am sorry to see Webber shipped out of town in such a seemingly terrible deal, and I hate to see y'all fans have to pay the price for whatever sore feelings might have accrued from that silly Peja/Webber spat. I'll still be hopeful that we'll be able to see a Kings v. Mavs Part IV, matchup in the playoffs this year, but Petrie's ill-concieved trade may have torpedoed that hope...
