RENO-Eric Musselman was glad to get back to the letters and numbers he's more comfortable with Sunday night.
Hours after the Kings' coach publicly apologized for his Saturday-morning arrest, the talk of DUIs fizzled, making way for talk of the latest 'W' as the Kings downed New Orleans in an exhibition game at Lawlor Events Center.
And if ever there was a way to put him back in a cheery coaching mood, it was numbers like 117, as in Kings points, and 3-1, as in his squad's exhibition record.
The 117-93 victory in front of a crowd of 5,377 left Musselman feeling good about all facets of his operation, from Francisco García's 15 points to another solid outing for Ronnie Price (18 points) and no lack of scoring in between.
The only matter of negative hoops news for Musselman was an injury to point guard Mike Bibby, who left in the third quarter after jamming his right thumb and will be X-rayed in Sacramento. Small forward Ron Artest had his best shooting game yet, hitting 8 of 12 shots for 22 points to go with seven rebounds and four assists.
"I thought we did a good job playing each quarter," Musselman said. "I thought our guys really buckled down at the start of each quarter. We're doing a really good job offensively. We cut those turnovers down (to 14) ... because we'd been giving up 10 shots per game on turnovers."
The Hornets brought former Kings Peja Stojakovic and Bobby Jackson, who scored 15 and 10 points, respectively, but left feeling not so rosy about the status of a team that has high expectations this season.
"We look like the Bad News Bears," said Hornets point guard Chris Paul, who scored 14 points and had five assists. "Every team has an identity. Right now we don't have one."
Cuts coming -- Musselman said there will be a cut today, bringing the roster to 16 players with at least one more per league rules. The next cut likely will be the last and should come this week.
Among the roster hopefuls, rookie forwards Louis Amundson (three rebounds in 10 minutes) and Justin Williams (two rebounds in six minutes) were scoreless. Center Loren Woods didn't play for the third consecutive game, and center Vitaly Potapenko has yet to play. Point guard Jason Hart played two minutes.
Amundson said nerves have been affecting his play, not to mention the knowledge that decision time for Kings management is here.
"I feel like I'm still not as comfortable as I want to be out there," he said. "I'm going a little too fast, and I'm a little nervous out there. But the more minutes I play, the more comfortable I get.
"Kenny (Thomas) was just talking to me, saying, 'Keep your head up and keep playing.' Everybody was there as a rookie."
Return of Peja -- With a day off in Sacramento, Stojakovic will have time for a welcome-back party. And he has just the facility, too, as the former Kings forward still owns his house in Granite Bay.
Stojakovic, who was traded to Indiana from Sacramento last December and signed with the Hornets in the offseason, is making his first trip back to Arco Arena for Tuesday night's game.
"Seeing the guys, the fans in Sacramento, seeing how my house is doing, will be good," he said. "I still have a lot of friends there, and it was eight wonderful years."
Youngsters soaring -- Rookie guard Quincy Douby and second-year point guard Ronnie Price provided the highlight moments of the evening.
Price's came in the third quarter, when he took a pass from Artest on a fast break and dunked with three Hornets nearby in the middle of the lane.
Douby had a soaring, one-handed slam with 28 seconds left that prompted much of the Kings' bench to rise and applaud.
