Jessica Dickson traded to the Indiana Fever

Jessica Dickson, who was the Monarchs' 2nd-round pick in last week's WNBA Draft, was traded to the Indiana Fever in exchange for a third-round draft pick in the 2008 Draft.

I don't follow the WNBA at all but for some reason I clicked on this thread. Can someone explain why you would trade a 2nd round pick(someone you actually picked) for a 3rd round pick in next years draft???

It's too bad we couldn't get a 2nd rounder for her, not that Indy's 2nd round pick would really be that great, but this figures to be our third 3rd round pick in 2008.

It sounded like the Monarchs really liked Dickson, they just didn't end up having a spot for her. They were looking at her as a possibility for their 1st round pick when they still had one, but they made the deal for Chelsea instead. Dickson ended up falling to them in the 2nd round anyways, but they don't really have the spot on the roster anymore. We still don't have enough active roster spots to go around with the players that I would consider "locks" to make the team. At best, I think Dickson would have been sitting in street clothes next to whoever our player #12 ends up being.

I think it has to do with the expected overall depth of next year's draft. Which probably explains why Indy traded us Atkinson (their 1st round pick in 2006) for our 2008 2nd round pick. The players that should be available in next year's second and third rounds are better than the players that were available this year. (Which is exactly why I wanted a 2nd round pick for Dickson!)

yes, there might be more depth in next year's draft but man, we're stacking up on 3rd round material. I know that our roster is basically set....2005 championship team +/- some parts but I thought jessica dickson should've at least gotten tried out. i mean she seemed good. and most certainly not for 3rd round material.

I think it's because the Monarchs expect the next year to be an expansion year, in which they won't be able to protect the players they want to and would have to lose someone like her anyway.

but they'd lose somebody else then. (someone they probably would like more than her)
Why is that? This is not like the Kings losing Gerald Wallace--they had to lose him because you have to make at least one player available. But that's not the situation we are talking about here.

That very well can be the reasoning behind this move. Makes sense (as I think more about it)...to accomodate her on the roster, you need to dump a player. If expansion does happen in 2008, we'da likely lost her or someone like her...may as well get something for her right now.

It's all true, she would've come on to a team that had two players who have already proven that they can play at this level at her position(Powell and Atkinson), and she would've had to compete with Kim Smith for minutes. She likely would've spent most of the season in street clothes and there was no guarantee she would've even been given a spot on the final roster unfortunately, as good as she may have been.
