With the announcement of the Kevin Martin trade to Houston, the future of the Kings just got a lot more interesting.
While most Kings fans have been looking for Petrie to make a move for a "superstar" caliber big, it seems instead he might now be showing his hand - building a team of youth and determination that will be a departure from what we've been seeing for the past few years.
The excitement we saw early this year, before Martin returned from his injury, could be in evidence again as our roster just got tougher and more defensively oriented.
Don't get me wrong - I will miss Kevin Martin and what he did for the Kings on and off the court. The young man is a class act. But, having said that, it had become pretty apparent that Martin was the square peg in the round hole - his style of play and game just didn't seem to mesh with the kids on most nights. It wasn't because he didn't try; it was because he was just the wrong kind of player for the team Petrie is now bringing to fruition.
The rest of this season could be very, very interesting. It will not be boring and we will all get a rest from the finger-pointing, name-calling, blame assessing, etc. that had seemed to become part and parcel of this board all too often lately.
While the final details are yet to be made public, there are going to be some new faces in town in the next few days.
To Kevin and those leaving - thanks for the memories. For those coming to the Kings - welcome to Sacramento, home of the greatest fans in the NBA (in my humble and purple-tinted opinion). Do your best and you'll fit right in.
Once, now and forever - GO KINGS!!!
