i dropped my ipod in water and now it's dead. the costumer service people are telling me that there's nothing they can do about it and i essentially have to get another one if i wish to continue listening to my music through ipod.

i am just writing to the fellow ipod users, whoever you are out there, and see if you know anything about it. is it fixable? who would i send it to?

Sorry man, that's tough. Those things are expensive! I don't own an Ipod but I have plans on getting one. Now I know not to drop it in water when I get it ;)

One thing that works when you drop an electronic in water such as a cell phone, etc is to open it up by taking it apart and blow drying it. Normally if it's done as soon as it happens, it returns back to new. My dad did it for me a few years back when I had my cell phone in a bag with a bottle of OJ that was partially opened and spilled all over my phone. Try this for your ipod. It may or may not work.

It depends on whether the electronic device is turned on (being powered) when it goes into the water. If power is flowing thru the circuitry, chances are you have fried a lot of components. In that case, you could never afford the price of the component replacement, much less the labor to fix it. It would actually be cheaper to replace than to repair. Today we call most electronics, "throw away electronics" because it is usually cheaper to replace. I don't know if that is the case with an ipod. I am not familiar with its circuitry.

One Thing You Need to Know ...

I bought one for my wife for Chistmas and I grilled the sales-person up-n-down.

During this grill session I found out that the battery will NO LONGER TAKE A CHARGE after about 2 years of use. The battery is NOT REPLACEABLE. So, what do you do ??? Well, I almost NEVER buy the warranty/guarantee ... I did in this case .... they'll replace it FOR FREE ... they don't have a choice (and you get another IPOD that's covered under the warranty/guarantee you already purchased). FREE FOR LIFE !!! So, anyway, this sales-person suddenly realized he had a legitimate reason to promote the warranty/guarantee.

Not sure what you can do about getting your IPOD repaired - did you purchase the warranty/guarantee ??? Doesn't sound like you did ... SORRY.

I have heard of places that can attempt to repair electronic equipment that have undergone severe WATER DAMAGE ... can be very costly ... no guarantees. Still, worth looking into ...

So the IPOD is only guaranteed to work for two years??? Seriously? That is a total rip-off. I can't think of any other reason for them to be designed that way than to make the consumer have to shell out money to buy another one after only two years. That is a total rip-off. How much more if the warranty? This makes me seriously re-consider wanting to buy one now.

They'll replace the battery, currently for $99, as far as I know. From what I have seen over at ipodlounge.com, you'll send in your old iPod and generally speaking they'll just replace it with whatever is current.

So, for example, if you had a 1st generation 10 Gig iPod (I don't remember if it came in 10 Gig, so just go with me on this) and the battery died, you'd spend $99 for a new battery, they'd send you a box to send it to them in, and you'd wind up with a 3rd generation 15 Gig iPod.

They'll replace it with whatever is the closest size. That is how they have done it in the past from what I have seen.

So call them back and tell them you made up the "dropping in water" story and that actually the battery died ;)

Apple is a well run company and really care about customer perception.

^^^ some good advices here.... It's true Fakie- bottom line is if you didn't purchase any type of warranty chances of getting it fixed for free are very slim (especially if you bought it through a regular store). Your best bet is (like Gotbitbull said) is to contact Apple directly and say that battery died..... Things like this can happen after all..... I had some issues with my Apple laptop battery (not charging properly) and they replaced it with no questions asked....
Good luck!

thank you guys for the input. i am just still in denial about it. i am letting it air out a couple of days and see if i get extremely lucky.
i don't have warranty on it, except the one that came with the ipod. i think i'll get the applecare if i get another one.
oh, well, i guess this is part of life.

Did it sprout?

1st of all, I am with VF21.

2nd........if you send it in saying that the battery "died", they will, most likely, catch you in your lie anyway. There are ways to tell when there has been water damage to components rather than just the battery dying.

well, it's actually my sister's ipod that dropped, and she's heartbroken about it. i am not gonna teach her to trick the company into getting her a new one, because we may lose something more valuable for her as a person than what an ipod is worth.

it's just stuff. it's expensive, but good thing is it's replaceable. she's got a birthday coming up and i just got a raise from work. i think it'll be a good birthday gift.

who knows, i am still airing it out, see if i get extrememly lucky ;)
