HoopsHype.com 2006 draft - vol. 2

I like Rondo alot, but only if we traded Bibby for some reason. Otherwise, Rondo just becomes the next Bobby Jackson, which is a silly use of a lottery pick. Then again, we miss that energy, and there could be far worse results than getting a Bobby J replacement. Chief amongst them, drafting a Spanish dude who doesn't feel like playing in the NBA. That would suck. Is Orlando shopping that guy by the way?

If we pass on Shelden Williams anywhere after the Top 5 I will be convinced that I am a better talent evaluator than Geoff Petrie. And I mean that. That statement was written with complete integrity and sincerity. Sometimes I think Petrie drafts like Krause. He takes the guy that's going to make him look REALLY smart if he pans out. Outside of Garcia, he never takes the obvious pick.

Unless some team wants Trajan Langdon Jr., Redick will not be a lottery pick. Late first maybe. But spending a lottery pick on him would not be very smart. I think the Duke scouting report is etched in stone at this point; you can roll the dice on their swing men and big guys, but if you draft one of their guards you're an idiot. Only Duhon has even made a dent in the league. Coach K recruits guards that remind of him of himself, which means they are very smart, very hard workers, very good leaders, and also do not possess an ounce of NBA talent.

Williams looks interesting too. The site says he plays like a center in a power forward's body, but considering we have a point guard in a center's body and a power forward in a shooting guard's body... I think he would fit right in.

if we trade peja..... reddick would be a good replacement.... but if not sheldon williams would be nice backin up miller....

Since were going to keep Martin/Garcia, Reddick wouldn't fit, nor would we need to draft him. Reddick is a great shooter/scorer, but he'll be a 6th man/bench player in the NBA. As he's much undersized for the SG spot at 6-4 190 lbs, and isn't a PG. Even if we trade one of the young swingmen away, wouldn't see us drafting him. We'll be drafting frontcourt player(s).

Shelden Williams will be a combo big man, I think.

Morrison is better than Peja and has all the aggressiveness Peja lacks. But Morrison is expected to be drafted in the Top 5 overall. "Luckily" we seem to be inching in that direction.

I'm not enamored with Morrison. To me, he's a carbon copy of Keith Van Horn and Carmello Anthony. He's going to be a good player, but I woud like to see the Kings go in a different direction. I now go to Bill Simmons for the analysis:

Just kidding … you're right about Morrison. Phenomenal scorer, unbelievable range, remarkable competitor. I jumped on the Gonzaga bandwagon this season and started TiVo-ing its games just because I enjoy watching him so much. And yes, he reminds me of Young Larry as a scorer -- not just his range, but the way he can shoot in traffic and score with a hand in his face, as well as the way his teammates rally around him (which happened even more for Bird when he played at Indiana State). But Morrison doesn't affect games with his rebounding and passing, which were the qualities that always separated Bird from every other big scorer of his generation (and the reason he won three straight MVPs). So there's no real comparison here.

Is there a little Bird in Morrison? Absolutely. But there's also more than a little Bobby Dandridge, some young Jamaal Wilkes, a little dash of Rex Chapman, maybe even a little Nowitzki (the way he releases his shot) and Detlef Schrempf (all the garbage points). I don't think there's ever been anyone quite like him. Throw in the cheesy mustache and I'm about three more 40-point explosions away from flying up to Gonzaga to write a column about him.

I like Morrison a lot, but not on this team. Not unless we upgrade our big man. Morrison and Garnett, Morrison and Elton Brand, Morrison and Chris Bosh, those I like. Morrison and Shareef, or Miller, I don't like.

I also like Rondo. I like his length, and think he can be a good back-up to Bibby in due time. But, if we're going to develop players, I would much rather we do it with a big man. Big man or bust, that's how I see it. We have such a critical need for an interior presence that I see no reason not draft a big man. Even if the guy has little upside, I just want to see some emphasis on defense in the middle.

Then the intimidation factor goes down. Look what happened to Pau Gasol... no shave=scary.

I don't think anyone will be intimitaded by Adam's 8 hairs reluctantly creeping over the ridgeline known as his upper lip. Let me edit my original statement slightly: take Morrison if he either shaves or completes puberty.

"Although it's too early to determine which players will enter the NBA draft and where they will be taken, one Eastern Conference scout predicted: "There will be a lot of good players in the (2006) draft, but there's not a lot of size among the American players. The best of the big men probably will be LaMarcus Aldridge of Texas.'' Chicago Sun-Times

"Aldridge, a 6-11 sophomore from Dallas, is projected as a power forward and has impressed with his athletic ability. Other potential high picks are 6-8 sophomore forward Rudy Gay of Connecticut; 6-8 junior forward Adam Morrison of Gonzaga; 6-9 senior forward Shelden Williams of Duke; 6-10 junior forward Josh Boone of Connecticut; 6-7 senior forward Rodney Carney of Memphis; and Rudy Fernandez, a 6-6 shooting guard from Spain." Chicago Sun-Times

"Most of the top big men in the draft figure to be foreign-born, including 6-11 Andrea Bargnani of Italy and 6-11 Tiago Splitter of Brazil." Chicago Sun-Times

Athleticism athleticism athleticism. If Aldridge isn't available I'll take Rodney Carney even if he'd be the third swing man in a row.

I'd be fine and good with us drafting one of Williams/O'Bryant/Aldridge/Boone/Gray/Horford/Carney/Mardy Collins. Preferrably one of the six bigs above.

Watching the Duke/Wake game... there's no way Shelden Williams is 6'9". Long arms, but he can't be more than 6'6"/6'7".

I'm watching also before NBA comes on. I don't think Shelden's 6'6"/6'7" though. Probably go back to it sometimes.

He's barely taller than J.J. Redick, who is listed at 6'4". I really have my doubts about 6'9"

For another site of info about the players being talked about:

For anyone who watches NCAA 'ball, what teams you like/follow/watch? For me it's UNC/Miami/MSU/Wake Forest/Washington/Arizona.

I'll be watching other teams based on some players who'll be in the draft.

Sheldon isn't 6'6". I'd say 6'8" to 6"9" is about right to me. But those arms are sooo long. Ben Wallace type stuff going on there. Still I don't know how this guy will do in the NBA. He doesn't really do all that much for me. I am a little skeptical.

Hey Kings113, what do you think about Adam Morrison? I watched him play a bit last night against Loyola, and man. #1 He can definitely score. #2 He is slow. #3 He doesn't play one lick of defense.

Yep, and Gonzaga is one of my upset specials as well. They're going to end up with a high seed, and get knocked off by a mid-level team from a major conference. Every year they get some impressive early wins, but while other teams are getting better against their conference, Gonzaga shleps through the WCC.

I think the Kings HAVE to draft a front court player this year.

Petrie has made it very clear. He DOES NOT draft out of need. He drafts the BEST PLAYER AVAILABLE. Your never going to see Petrie draft 7 footer just because we need a big man. He will draft a 7 footer only because he is the best player available. If a shooting gaurd is the best player on the board thats who he'll draft.
