Heisman Heisman Heisman

#1
While there is discussion about the Heisman trophy in the NCAA Football and Reggie Bush threads, I figured there should be a more official Heisman thread.

The preliminary question is, who has a chance to win it?

Some obvious candidates to go to NYC for the Heisman presentation:
-Matt Leinart
-Vince Young
-Reggie Bush
-Brady Quinn
-Jerome Harrison

Some dark horse candidates:
-Drew Olson (QB rating)
-DeAngelo Williams (yardage/TDs)
-Brian Brohm (QB rating)
-Brian Calhoun (TDs/yardage
-Jeff Samardzija (average, yardage, TDs)
-Cory Hodges (TD/yardage)

And while in all likelihood the darkhorses won't even make it to NYC, I do think there can be a case made for them (as shown).

The real question is, actually, who will WIN the Heisman trophy?

I would vote for Reggie Bush. The Heisman trophy is supposed to go to the best player in college football, not the MVP. You could say Leinart and Young and possibly Quinn and Olson are more valuble to their team than Reggie is. Hard to say whether or not USC is undefeated with White at RB full time and no Reggie. I wouldnt bet against it.

The best player in college football this year and IMO last year was Reggie Bush.

USC would still be undefeated with White running full time I believe, but Reggie bush is the most electrifying player I've seen in a long while. Reggie Bush hands down, 619.

I'm a Fresno State Alum and believe me....if it wasn't for Reggie Bush USC would not be undefeated this year. He is hands down the best player in College Football this year and I believe he was last year as well.

first, what does being a fresno state alum have to do with anything? my cousin plays for fresno state, he speaks very highly of both running backs. anyways, its all just speculation.

And so it seems Reggie Bush is the hands down winner for at least this crowd of Kings fans.

Somewhat suprising to me, although many Kings fans are in Cali so that makes sense.

I'd say either Bush, Leinart, or Olson deserves the Heisman this year, depending on how each does this weekend in the USC UCLA game. If Olson comes out and throws for 5 and wins the game, I'd put him in there. If Bush is held to under 150 yds (not likely against the #115 run defense), and Leinart puts up 4 or 5 scores in any way and throws for at least 300 yards, pencil in Leinart. Otherwise, Bush should be the winner.

Sadly, none of these will happen. Because of the almost deffinite splitting of votes between at least Leinart and Bush, and because Olson plays for a non-undefeated team and is hyped very little, Texas's Vince Young will pull through with all of the Midwest votes.

I just dont see Bush and Leinart splitting that many votes. I think most know that it is Reggie's year and that Lerinart already won it. Eventhough Leinart has had a better year statistically, Bush has been eye dropping. They will split some votes giving Young a good shot at the Heisman but I dont think it is enough. The game is on early tonight (4:30 pacific and 7:30 eastern) so some of the East coast voters can see a little of Reggie. If he has a monster game, he wins it. If he has a horrible game and Young, who plays at 1pm eastern has a monster game then put him in there.

Well, I watched him put up 500+ yards in their game a few weeks ago and single handedly win that game. White is a good running back but he can't do what Bush does.

White: 163 carries, 1024yds, 6.3avg, 19TD
Bush: 163 carries, 1398yds, 8.6avg, 13TD

I think that if White had the ball full time... they would easily be undefeated. Imagine Bush having 300 carries like some backs in NCAA. Yikes.

Bush does more than just run the ball. He returns kicks and punts and is just amazing to watch. You may be right though but I guess we will never know.

With Bush's performance ysterday (260 yards on 24 carries, 2 TDs), there is little to none doubt in my mind that Bush SHOULD be the 2005 Heisman Trophy winner.

With Vince Young's good performance, there is a good possiblilty he will get a shot, although clearly only because of the splitting of votes, however few or many are actually split.

And about Leinart. If he actually does vote for his teammate, I will be very impressed. While Leinart has never shown any selfishness, having a vote to help you win a trophy and make history to become the second two-time winner is a hard thing to pass up, especially when he has had a better statistical year this year (which proves to me even more that he didn't deserve it last year...and a certain 2000 yard rusher from Cal did...but that's a seperate topic, I guess). (wow that was a long sentence...)

I think Drew Olson shoud go to NYC still, along with Leinart, Bush, Young, and Harrison, but him and Harrison don't deserve such accolades when 3 other stars are shining brighter. At least for now. All they can do is try to prove to be better players in the NFL.

Reggie's gonna look so nice in red and gold. ;)

Seriously, I cannot imagine him NOT winning, especially since Matt already won last year.

He hasn't said whether he's going pro or not...yet. Everyone thought Leinart was going last year....who knows.

Bush runs off with Heisman Trophy

Bush runs off with Heisman Trophy By RALPH D. RUSSO, AP Sports Writer
December 10, 2005

AP - Dec 10, 9:46 pm EST
More Photos NEW YORK (AP) -- Reggie Bush left the competition far, far behind -- as usual.
Southern California's incomparable junior tailback won the Heisman Trophy as college football's best player in a landslide Saturday night over Texas quarterback Vince Young and USC quarterback Matt Leinart, last year's winner.
Flashing uncanny acceleration and ability to change direction, Bush has conjured up memories of Gale Sayers, drawn comparisons to Marshall Faulk, Barry Sanders and Tony Dorsett, and is the favorite to be the No. 1 pick in April's NFL draft.
"Oh man, this is amazing," Bush said, a row of former winners lining the stage behind him. "It's truly an honor to be elected to this fraternity. I've been in college for three years and it's the first time I've been invited into a fraternity."
Bush received 2,541 points to finish 933 points ahead of Young, with Leinart a distant third.
The 784 first-place votes received by Bush was the second-most in Heisman history, topped only by another famous USC player -- O.J. Simpson, who had 855 in 1968. Bush was first in all six regions and appeared on 99 percent of the ballots, also a Heisman record.
Bush and Leinart will be the first Heisman winners to play in a college game together when USC goes for a third straight national title against Texas in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 4.
When Bush's name was announced, he bent over in his chair and clasped his hands. After hugging his mother, stepfather and brother, he headed for the podium to give his acceptance speech, starting out with a huge sigh of relief. Surely he must have been the only one with any doubts about the outcome.
This year's Heisman race appeared tight for much of the season, with Bush making a big statement in mid-October against Notre Dame. He ran for 160 yards and three touchdowns in South Bend, and provided the final push Leinart needed to score the winning TD in the closing seconds of a classic 34-31 victory.
But Bush was relatively low-key after the Notre Dame game and Young seemed to have pulled ahead, with talk that two candidates from USC would cancel each other out.
That was until Nov. 19, when Bush left Fresno State repeatedly grasping at air and onlookers grasping for superlatives to describe a performance that had to be seen to be truly appreciated.
He ran for 295 yards, racked up 513 all-purpose yards -- the second-highest total in NCAA history -- and USC escaped with a 50-42 victory.
If there was still any doubt Bush was best, he dispelled it against UCLA, running for 260 yards and two touchdowns in a 66-19 victory. Only the lopsided score kept Bush from doing even more damage.
As the Trojans completed another perfect regular season, it seemed a foregone conclusion that Bush would become the fifth USC tailback to win the Heisman, following Mike Garrett, Simpson, Charles White and Marcus Allen.
The 200-pounder from Spring Valley, Calif., just outside of San Diego, ran for 1,658 yards this season, a dizzying average of 8.9 yards per carry, while leading the nation in all-purpose yards with 217.9 per game.

AP - Dec 10, 9:46 pm EST
More Photos USC now has produced seven Heisman winners, matching the record held by Notre Dame, and an unprecedented three in four years, starting with quarterback Carson Palmer in 2002.
Now Bush will have to make the kind of decision Leinart did last season: Stay in school or go.
Leinart surprised many by returning to USC for his senior year when he could have entered the NFL draft and become an instant millionaire.
"Matt, what more can I say?" Bush said. "Your decision to come back has changed my life."
By staying, Leinart made a run at joining Ohio State's Archie Griffin as the only other two-time Heisman winner, and helped USC extend its winning streak to 34 straight games, heading into the Rose Bowl.
Leinart said he voted for Bush first, Young second and left his third-place vote blank.
"I knew I was going to get third," Leinart said. "I wanted to go on stage as a past winner because I knew I wasn't going to win. The right guy won."
Bush has said he'll decide about the NFL after the BCS title game.
Young, also a junior, appears to have a bright NFL future, too, though he isn't quite the can't-miss prospect Bush and Leinart have been labeled.
Young said he intends to stay at Texas for another year.
Bush's career has been in a steady ascent since he arrived at USC. He rushed for 537 yards as a freshman and 908 as a sophomore, when he finished fifth in the Heisman voting.
Heading into the 2005 season, Bush was determined to show he was more than just a scatback and with fancy moves. He worked out with San Diego Chargers star LaDainian Tomlinson, put on some muscle, became a stronger inside runner and, on a team filled with All-Americans, became the No. 1 attraction.

He'd definitely make owning a #5 Niner Jersey worthwhile!! I'd love to see him in SF, but I still vote to trade down if the right deal comes along. We have a talent void that several high picks could cure.
