MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Grizzlies coach Marc Iavaroni filled out his staff Friday by announcing the hiring of former NBA head coach Johnny Davis, veteran NBA assistant coach Gordon Chiesa and David Joerger from the NBADL.
"They bring a diversely successful set of experience, skills and teamwork that will form the backbone of our efforts to bring out the best in our players throughout the season and playoffs," Iavaroni said in a statement.
This is the first NBA job for Joerger, 33, of Bismarck, N.D., who won an NBA Developmental League title last season with the Dakota Wizards, an IBA title and three CBA titles.
Since this is Iavaroni's first head coaching job, he tapped experience in Davis. He was head coach of the Philadelphia 76ers in 1996-97 and the Orlando Magic from 2003-2005. Davis also was an assistant at Indiana last season and has coached in Atlanta, Los Angeles Clippers, Portland, New Jersey and Minnesota.
Chiesa joins Memphis from Seattle where he was an assistant this past season. He also has worked in New Jersey but spent most of his career, 16 years, with Utah helping the Jazz win two Western Conference titles during 14 straight playoff appearances.
Looks like the way to do it for Reggie. Go get some guys who have been around the block a few times and put together an experienced group of assistants. And yes, I know he said that's his plan. Hopefully he follows through.
