Greatest WR Ever traded for 7th rd pick

While the trade likely will not be announced until Tuesday, the Oakland Raiders on Monday night reached agreement on a deal that will send disgruntled wide receiver Jerry Rice to the Seattle Seahawks for a conditional seventh-round draft choice.

Earlier in the day, ESPN.com learned through several Oakland players that Rice bade farewell to his Raiders teammates, telling them he expected to be shipped to the Seahawks. In fact, Rice even autographed some of his used football cleats for younger teammates and signed some jerseys as well.

"He basically said, 'Hey, I'm out of here,' and wished us good luck for the rest of the season," said one player.

Trades for the 2004 season must be completed Tuesday by 4 p.m. Eastern time.

"Certainly we'd consider it," Holmgren said in Kirkland, Wash. "I had our pro personnel people look at Jerry. Yeah, we're exploring it. ... I would think it would give any team a boost, but really it's up to the Raiders. It's really their call."

The most prolific wide receiver in NFL history, and some contend the greatest player at any position, Rice has been all but forgotten by the Raiders in his 20th league season. He has just five receptions and, in three of five games, did not register a catch.

Although he did not demand a trade, Rice, who has made no secret of his desire to move to a team where he could get increased playing time, met last Wednesday with Oakland owner Al Davis. Since that meeting, he has consistently referred to the Raiders in the past tense, and spoken publicly about his fond memories of his tenure there.

In the past few days, the Raiders have ramped up their efforts to resolve the Rice issue, despite finding a relatively soft market for his services. At age 42, Rice is no longer a big-play threat, and most personnel directors view him as a possession receiver at best. Oakland officials believe that Rice, if retained, would simply be a distraction for the balance of the season.

The Seahawks were one of the finalists for Rice's services when he was released by San Francisco in the spring of 2001. Plus, the Seahawks, who have lost two straight games after a 3-0 start, are having problems at the wide receiver position.

No. 3 wideout Bobby Engram, one of the top slot receivers in the league, suffered a sprained left ankle in Sunday's defeat at New England and could be sidelined be a week or two.

Solid pickup for the hawks to strenghthen an already very good WR core. I was hoping the cheap niners would bring him in so Rice can atleast retire where he belongs. They mentioned earlier in the paper the niner's didn't want to take on his salary ,but even for a 7th rounder? Oh well . . .

Considering how Rice felt about a certain person *cough YORK cough* when he left, I wasn't surprised the 49ers didn't try to get him back. It's a shame. I would loved to have seen him finish out his career in SF...

Good luck, Jerry!!!

I'm sure he eventually will. Once he's really ready to retire, the 49ers could offer signing him to a one-day contract. If Rice wants to retire a Niner, it's the honorable way to go out.

Seattle seems like one of the best (if not best) scenarios to go to. He gets to stay on the west coast on a team that has high playoff potential. Plus they get a receiver that can consistently catch the ball! Dropped passes have been killing that team. Plus Koren Robinson is now facing a four-game suspension for violating the league substance abuse policy, so they would have been needing the help.

A seventh-round pick (and a conditional one at that) sounds about right for a once-elite 42-year old player to help give you a playoff push. The Raiders should be grateful they got anything for him. No way they would've held on to him after the trading deadline given some bad blood was brewing.

I'm happy for two reasons: 1. Matt Hasselbeck is on my fantasy team and let's just say Jerry Rice WILL NOT drop passes. 2. Jerry now has a real ligit shot at getting another ring.

What I will NEVER forgive the Raiders for is being the reason Rice's streak of receptions in consecutive games came to a grinding halt. He sure couldn't catch what wasn't thrown to him.

That was terrible.

Are you saying the Seahawks have a legit shot at winning the Superbowl?

What ever happened to going out on top?
Obviously that doesn't matter to the greatest WR of all time. His legacy won't ever be tarnished with all the numerous accolades and records regardless if he changed teams 10 times before he retired.

I'm thinking he's gonna do a fantastic job for the rest of the season with the Seahawks, if for no other reason than to vindicate himself...and show he's still got what it takes to be a productive WR in the NFL.

And I was able to get him onto both my fantasy teams.

Yep. Jerry Rice is now a DEVIL!!!

I'm been a niner fan every since I've watched football. While I do respect Jerry and he will always be a niner to me, he has gotten a bit pre-madonnaish. I don't think he's excepted the fact that he's a 42 year old receiver with 2 surgically repaired knees. While I do think the raiders could have at least got him one reception a game, their offense game plan is more down the field now. He doesn't have the speed to do that anymore.

The big controversy now is he's asked if he can have #80. Some of you remember that was Steve Largents # and it's retired. Steve Largent has offered Jerry to wear the number, but I hope the league steps in. A retired Jersey is a retired Jersey. I also think that would leave a bad taste in Seattle fans as well. Steve Largent is a god there. The greatest receiver in SeaHawks history.

It would be weird to see him in anything besides #80, but he shouldn't wear that number in Seattle.

Edit- I just read on the seahawks website that Jerry will in fact be wearing Steve Largents retired number. Steve Largent gave the ok. I still think that's wrong. It kind of diminishes the prestige of having a number retired.

Rice is a shoo-in for the Hall of Fame, it maybe one reason why Largent agreed.
The prestige will still be the same since another "great" would be using it.

If memory serves me right, I think the Celtics had a retired number and was reused by another player who turned out to be another Celtic great. Hmmm . . .
I think it was #18 and was reissued to Dave Cowens.

To me it doesn't matter if Rice is going to the Hall of Fame. We all know his achievments. The fact still stands that the number was RETIRED. Rice could have worn is Mississippi state #88.

It is a retired # and that should be respected, but Jerry Rice called Steve Largent and respectfully requested to be able to use the number. Largent granted the request and gave Jerry his blessing. Largent could have easily said no and forced Jerry to wear a new number for the first time in 21 years, but he didnt. He acknowledged the greatness of Rice, was throughly honored that Jerry personally called him, and granted the request. Classy move if you ask me.

Good trade for the Seahawks. Extreme sign of disloyalty by the Raiders, starting with letting Rice's streak end a few weeks ago. Five catches for 67 yards for the team's leading receiver last season? That's just dumb. The Seahawks will be able to use Jerry Rice, even if only as a third receiver. Good luck to the Seahawks and Rice.

Re: #80

I don't think it's that big of a deal. I mean, I see both sides equally. Rice isn't going to have his number retired as a Seahawk, so in a couple of years it won't even matter. And given that he's a future Hall of Famer and a respectable person, Largent had no problem with it. It's certainly not tarnishing what the number 80 has stood for for the Seahawks for the last 30 years. And if he had a problem with it and declined Rice's request, then it probably wouldn't have been an issue then either.

I also don't think that I personally would have even asked to wear an already retired number, even after 21 years as the best receiver in the world, several Super Bowl rings and countless entries in the record books while wearing that number. He's not going to be there that long, and everyone who watches football would notice him regardless of his number. It's not the number that makes the player, anyways.

I don't have a problem with Rice temporarily wearing the #80. My son-in-law, who is a huge Seahawks fan, is thrilled and has no problem with it either.

Players are superstitious about a lot of stuff. Rice has worn the number his entire career. If he thinks it brings him luck and is important, then I think he did the right thing in calling Largent and seeking permission to wear it. As Supes says, the number will be eventually retired in SF - at least it BETTER BE!!!

Main thing for Seahawks fans right now, is they've just acquired someone who can help Robinson, Jackson and the other Hawk receivers with some tricks of the trade in being the best possible wide receivers they can be.

I think it's a win-win situation. Bottom line, I'm just glad Jerry is out of Oakland. They spit on him when they allowed his record to be broken - not because of anything Jerry did or didn't do, but by not even throwing a pass in his direction. That was just wrong. In fact, to paraphrase Vlade, "That was so stink!"

Good luck, Jerry!!
