Giants kick off free agency by signing Jerremy Affeldt, Bob Howry, and Edgar Renteria.

Not too bad...I've always liked Reteria, and the other two will be definite steps up from the Tyler Walker/Keiichi Yabu late inning garbage from last year.

And here's to hoping the Giants figure a way to sign CC.
That would make my off-season!

And for those of you who haven't seen this, check this article out.

Abut Lincecum and MLB 2k9 the video game.

Thanks for the link. I knew he was doing that game but it was cool to read about it.

Yeah, so far so good on this off-season. Renteria is sort of at a high price but it's only a two year deal.

I want CC bad too.. not as bad as I wanted Vladimir Guerrero several years ago but it's close. I guess CC would probably have to take a lot less money to play with the Giants. Although he's from the area and I hear his wife really wants him to play for SF.

I also heard some rumor about trading Jonathan Sanchez for some hitting.. and then there's always the Cain for hitting rumors.

CC will be our lumber.

1: Acquiring him will let us trade Cain for a monster bat....Prince Fielder, anyone?

2: Sadly...CC would instantly become the best power hitter on the Giants team...Dude hit some monsters for Milwaukee!

:p

...
Maybe Im just caught in the CC hype, but I want the guy.
If anything, just to stick it to the damn Yankees who I hate with a burning passion.

I want him too but I want to see hitting since we haven't had any good hitting for a while but if this allows us to trade Cain for a good bat I'm all for it.

We'll have two studs in CC and Lincecum.

I hate the Yankees.

The best thing that could ever happen is to see them flame out yet again and miss the playoffs.

Go Rays.
Go Sox.

RS is no different ... the only difference is that Yanks have more money.
The Yankees are my chosen east coast team of hate.

I really have nothing against the Red Sox and would have found it humorous had they signed all three players just because they would have upped the evil-empire and their fans.

Giants sign Randy Johnson to a one year deal.

http://sanfrancisco.giants.mlb.com/...ent_id=3728929&vkey=news_sf&fext=.jsp&c_id=sf

Nice.
Ive been against old people, but our staff is already loaded with young guns, and Noah Lowry is no lock to return to be the number 5 starter.

1: Lin'cy'cum
2: Cain
3: Zito
4: Johnson
5: Sanchez/Lowry

Not bad.

And Randy Johnson is 5 wins away from the magic 300 so we get to (most likely) see another milestone happen in a Giants uniform.
Which are always fun to see.

As a Sox fan I assure you they are only spending the amount of money that is necessary to compete against the Yankees on a yearly basis. Yeah, they have the 3rd highest payroll, but their division rival is still outspending them by a ridiculous margin. Fact is the Yankees are an entirely different ball game - if they want a player, they get him unless that player just won't play for the Yankees, because they will always offer 1 (million) dollar(s) more than the next guy. The Sox still operate within a budget, even if its high. They can't take on marginal players at exorbitant prices and go "who cares" if the player burns out by the end of his contract. Its why they gave up on Texeira who probably was never coming to the team anyways and why they lose a guy like Damon who was a town hero and spent years wrestling over the value of Manny's contract.

Anyhow, Randy is an interesting pickup for the Giants. If nothing else he can slide into the 3rd spot in the rotation and pitch good enough to be trade bait for a contender at the deadline while hopefully teaching the young guys a few things on the way.

Randy is a great thing ... now the Giants have a pretty strong and colorful (thanks to Randy) lineup of pitchers. May be the best in NL (my humble opinion :)).

However, they need at least one solid (or better star) hitter a-la Texiera .. ok .. a-la Dunn even with his defensive liabilities.

About the RS and Yankees. I understand that it is the Yanks that bomb a free agent market every year. However, my point is that the RS do not spend that much because they can not afford it, not because they are different. They have the same big-team-we-are-the-monsters mentality only with smaller opportunities (NY is NY). At the same time, I understand your opinion and you also have a point.

I think they way things are shaping up right now, we are already contending in the west.

All we need is that power or middle of the order bat to take the offensive load off of Rowand and Bengie.

I'd rather have Pablo at first and sign a 3rd baseman than vise-versa. but we'll see.

I have some mixed emotions about that one. I'd like to be able to cheer for Manny again, but I still can't get past the turmoil he put the Sox through being the difference between the wild card and home field throughout the playoffs, which may have been the difference between a Game 7 exit and another World Series.

No doubt if he actually took things seriously this would be HUGE.

Unless he takes a week off to re-evaluate his contract. But considering where the Giants have been lately I think you take that chance. Sounds like the market has cooled and he might be had at a fair price unless the Yanks decide to make a play, I think everyone else is done negotiating with Boras for the time being after the crap he pulled with Tex.

You're not hurting as bad as I am over the Teixeira deal, man. You guys still have bats. The Angels have NO power in their lineup, outside of broken down Vlad. 88 wins can take the division this season.

The only reason I cared about Tex was because the Sox front office decided to invest so much publically in trying to push that deal. I didn't understand it, it forces Youk back to third where Lowell should be healthy and in 2 or 3 years when Lowell is done they'll have Lars Anderson ready and he is supposed to be every bit if not more powerful than Tex. Then what? Tex will be immovable. Great assett to have but $25mil a year is for once in a generation talent imho. My Sox wishlist: a catcher that can swing a bat and a utility guy that can slide into CF or SS when Ells or whoever is playing SS goes into their inevitable midseason slump, plus a 5th starter and some consistency from the middle relievers.

http://www.leftymalo.com/2009/01/the_manny_numbers.php

El Lefty Malo - From ElLeftyMalo.com, we learn from BaseballProspectus.com's John Perotto the numbers of the Giants' two offers to Manny Ramirez.

'...one which would guarantee two years with vesting and club options that could make it a four-year, $100 million contract, and another that would guarantee him $63 million for three years with no options.

This is according to "a baseball source," writes ElLeftyMalo.
I don't really think ElLeftyMalo is a reliable source, and I don't know if it's in the best interest of the team...

But it's no longer the season of giving, and I.... AM.... GREEDY!

Get it done Giants.
I want Manny!
