Bird update

Bird met yesterday with trainers, who re-examined her broken nose. The two sides tentatively chose Monday for Bird to undergo surgery to reset the break, a team spokesperson said.

The All-Star point guard was fitted for a protective mask that she'll have to wear if she participates in Game 1 of the conference finals, tomorrow at Sacramento, and/or Game 2, Sunday at KeyArena. Officially, she's listed as day to day on the team's injury report. Bird told Storm officials that she doesn't feel any pain, and teammates have said there appears to be very little swelling around her nose. After missing Tuesday's workout, there's a chance that Bird will return to practice today to get adjusted to the plastic headgear.

So does that mean that Seattle believes this will be a two game sweep?
Does that mean that she will have the surgery Monday and not be available Tuesday?
Does that mean she can play after nose surgery? or
Does that mean the surgery will be rescheduled if the series goes three games?

I just found that part of the story interesting.

I don't see why someone would be unable to play with a broken nose. It doesn't affect their arms or legs, and they can wear a protective mask.

Bird expected to start against Sacramento
September 30, 2004

SEATTLE (AP) -- Seattle Storm guard Sue Bird is expected to start Game 1 of the WNBA Western Conference finals Friday against Sacramento despite a broken nose.

Bird went through a full-contact practice Thursday wearing a protective mask, working with Seattle's starting unit. After practice, coach Anne Donovan said Bird will start against the Monarchs.

``I feel really good about Sue and how proud I am with her,'' Donovan said. ``Other than a little slippage in the mask, she's doing great.''

Bird broke her nose less than three minutes into Game 2 of Seattle's first-round series against Minnesota when she collided with Minnesota's Teresa Edwards.

Bird took a direct hit to the nose during practice, but the mask absorbed the blow, she said. Some of her vision looking down is affected by the mask, but that is the only drawback, she said.

``I virtually have no pain,'' said Bird, who still has bruising under both eyes. ``The hardest thing is just (the mask). I'm not worried about getting hit.'' Surgery will be needed to reposition Bird's nose, but some of the swelling needs to go down before surgery can be performed. It tentatively has been set for Oct. 3, between Games 2 and 3 of the conference finals. Bird averaged 12.9 points per game this season, including 15 points and 4.3 assists against Sacramento. Seattle took three of four games from the Monarchs during the regular season.

The Storm's Sideline Reporter said ( on Monarchstalk Wednesday ) Bird's protective mask hindered Bird's vision earlier in the season. It affected her defense mostly. Im sure that should definately help us out tonight.

Just for some perspective on this from someone paying close attention to the Storm side of things - the doctors told her that she shouldn't have the surgery any later than Monday, or risk having the surgery be more serious, as things will have started to knit misaligned on their own accord. I'm sure her original hope was that we'd finish the series after 2 games (though I'm equally as sure that she's not feeling that way now!), so if Seattle wins tomorrow (deity-of-choice willing!) and the series goes to a game 3, she'll have a tough decision to make. She could theoretically play post-surgery, but Betty Lennox had a hard time of it, and was still post-anesthetic-woozy for a while. My guess is she'll put it off and risk the possibility of them having to rebreak it for the surgery, because that sounds like Sue. But I don't think the Monday date had any cockiness or overconfidence involved in setting it. We know you guys are tough!

Geeeeez.......I don't know about anybody else, but I just got really weak knee'd and woozy at the thought of these scenarios......Heck I'm just weak knee'd and woozy at the thought of breaking my nose and trying to play with a broken nose. As I said in an earlier thread, Sue's a gamer.

For the sake of Sue Bird...could we please finish this on Sunday ;)

Kat, thanks for the info. It is much appreciated. Maybe we are so used to spending all our energy on beating LA (and their cockiness), that we sometimes put LA's attitude onto other teams. Your explanation makes perfect sense.

Obviously, I would like to see the Monarchs get this done on Sunday. However, if they do not, I do not envy Sue her decision. She is a class player and she is tough. I fully expect that if there is a game 3, Sue Bird will be playing in it.

BTW - Welcome to KingsFans.com. We always welcome classy fans of other teams. Hope you enjoy your stay here.
