French Open

I'm excited about the tournament this year. An incredible rivalry has developed and I'm looking forward to seeing Nadal continue his amazing clay court streak. It's nice to see someone else win other than Federer which IMO is getting old. I would love to root for the Americans but as they seem allergic to clay for the most part;) , I won't even bother. Maybe Lindsay could do it if she was playing but I think it's more likely to be a Belgian (Clijsters gets my vote).
I'm looking forward to some great entertaining matches.

I'm a Fed fan, but it is nice to see him get challenged by another player for once. Federer is just simply too good, but Nadal is definately making it difficult for the top player in the world.

Flipping channels on the remote and lucked out to see Nadal win his record breaking 54th straight clay court match in the first round of the French. Vilas probably wondered if anyone would break his incredible streak of 53 straight clay court victories that i think stood for about 29 years and seemed very pleased it was Nadal. And that's one of the many things i love about this game. The camaderie, the respect and the legends. To see Vilas walk out there to honor Nadal was something special. Hard not to pull for Nadal as much as i like Federer. Not sure Fed will even get to the final but you have to like Raffy's chances. Stay tuned.

Congratulations to Nadal. I liked what Vilas had to say about him.
As predicted US men out early, only Blake left. Roddick's ankle caused him to retire and Ginepri just hasn't been playing very well lately, although being from Georgia, he should know a lot about red clay.
Interesting scene at the end of the Ancic-Capdeville match when they got into it and the umpire had to step in and seperate them.
Sharapova was lucky to win her first match, Washington put up a great effort.

That was rather sneaky by Vilas.

In the presence of Nadal, he was rather gracious. But I think his real emotions are better described by this press release.

PARIS (Reuters) - Guillermo Vilas says he is not impressed by Rafael
Nadal's winning streak on clay even though the Spaniard will break the Argentine's record if he comes through his first round at the French Open on Monday.

The 19-year-old Nadal has been undefeated on the slow surface in his last 53 matches and looks set to add a 54th consecutive win when he kicks off his title defense at Roland Garros against Swede Robin Soderling.

"First of all, Nadal's performance is spanning over two years, which is
not the same," Vilas, who set the record in 1977, told Reuters on
Monday. "Then, I have the feeling he added easy tournaments on his schedule just for that purpose," the 53-year-old added.

Vilas, who confessed he had to call the ATP to have confirmation of a record he had ignored, had his 1977 run ended in the Aix-en-Provence tournament semi-finals by Ilie Nastase.

"I did not lose to a player but against a racket," he said, referring
to the double-strung racket the Romanian was using at the time.

"I could not play him. When I was 6-1 7-5 down, I threw in the sponge," said Vilas, who had won the Tehran, Bogota, Santiago and Buenos Aires tournaments that year.

Vilas still fuming about a lost match that happened near 20 years ago. Talk about sour grapes..

EDIT: Nadal vs Mathieu was really neat btw.

Loving the storyline on Rafael Nadel (saw a great feature on him while viewing early matches on ESPN) more and more every day. Then i was thinking, well the guy is only human. Somebody is gonna beat him (on clay sooner or later). Then i was was wondering who at the French would it be. And i didn't come up w/ Federer. Don't know where the Russian Davydanko (sp?) is on the draw but that guy was a terror at the French last year. Dogged determination and game on clay. Could suprise the host of South Americans that always contend. Keep an eye out for Davydanko.

Speaking of challenges for Raffie i guess you can call the matchup today w/ Lleyton Hewitt an intriguing contest. Lleyton is always up for these kind of situations but w/ Lleyton you never know when he is gonna put it all together.

Kajun-agreed about the Mathieu match, that was good.
As far as Davydenko, he's in Federer's half of the draw and I would love it if he knocked off Rog. I've been very impressed with Monfils, of course being at home doesn't hurt but he was very good against Blake, and James even said he was the fastest player in the draw and one of the most talented. High praise indeed. I'm watching the Nadal-Hewitt match right now and this is a good one so far. I'll have to finish it later but looking forward to it. nadal started off very well but after the umpire called him for a time violation, Hewitt went on a roll. This could be the match iof the tournament, guess we'll see. In the ladies I have to say go Venus, although Hingis is surprisingly good considering she just came out of retirement.

Hey loops, you gotta consider Henin-Hardenne when it comes to the ladies side although Mauresmo and Hingis a certainly reasonable contenders...

^Tuesday at noon which is about 7am our time. I'm not sure if they'll be showing it live though but thye've been pretty good about showing the US players.
The Nadal match ended up not being that great but at least he won:D he's going to have to step it up to beat Federer.
I'm not surprised about Sharapova, her ankle's been bothering her and Safina is playing well right now. I haven't counted out Justine yet, she's always dangerous on clay, I just don't care for her personally. I want to see Kim and Venus in the final.

SO much for my final, Venus is out. I only caught the end but she lost in 3 sets to Vaidisova. Now Kim needs to beat Hingis. I have my fingers crossed.
Good news for Agassi fans, as of right now he will play at Wimbledon. I'm glad-I miss him.

OH MY GOD. DID YOU SEE THAT FEDERER PASSING?!?!?!?!?!

CAN YOU SAY NON-CALENDAR YEAR SLAM???

Sorry, but I am so excited, this will be one of the biggest finals ever.

Fed could make HISTORY here.

I'm so hyped, that I will skip Holland's first soccer match at the World Cup (which starts the same time that the Roland Garros final does...talk about major suckage.)

I haven't seen that match yet, i still have about 5 tapes to go through but if it's the one I think it is, then it was awesome. I did watch the Rafa match though (they didn't even show all of it, made me so mad:mad:) and that 3rd set was great tennis. We've got the Raf-fed final that everyone wanted and if it's only half as good as the last match they played, we're in for a treat. I will rush home for that one. I really hope Raf can win.
The ladies final comes in in a few minutes, I guess I'll pull for Justine, not a big fan of either of them. I just want to see some good tennis. This year it hasn't been very exciting.
At least we have Americans in both the doubles finals so I hope they do well also.

I am so pumped up for this match. Much as I love tennis, I don't remember being this excited probably since the 80's with Mac and Borg. What I wouldn't do to be in Paris right now. COME ON RAFA!!

Awful 1st set for Rafa but he's coming back to be up 2 sets to 1. Roger just doesn't seem to have been his usualy self the last 2 1/2 sets. VAMOS!:D

It was an ugly match overall.

Federer lost his concentration at 40-0 at 6-1 0-1, got broken, and let Nadal ultimately back into the match. After that, he was just missing everything (lots of UEs, and most balls were out by *several* meters).

****.

I so wanted to see him win four in a row.

Federer even showed some tears :(

Credit to Nadal though, after a shaky start, he regained his confidence.

60 match clay court winning streak. Defends his first slam win at the tender age of 20. He's truly a beast.

^ Agreed on most of that but I'm very happy Rafa won:D I was screaming vamos at the tv in the tiebreaker.
Lisa Raymond did win the ladies doubles so the US wasn't completely empty handed.

How can you not love Rafa. The guy is a gem and a fierce competitor and has brought some life to the tennis circuit. Great rivalry in our midst. Wasn't quite top notch tennis today but there will be more occasions. Loved seeing Rafa rollin in the red clay after the match and then going up to hug all his loved ones. Just a whole new fresh experience for men's tennis. Way to go Rafa.

Despite loss to Nadal, Federer solidifies No. 1 ranking

PARIS (AP) -- Roger Federer strengthened his hold on the No. 1 ranking despite losing to No. 2 Rafael Nadal in the French Open final, while women's champion Justine Henin-Hardenne jumped two spots to No. 3 on the WTA Tour.

Federer picked up extra points because he fared better this year than last at Roland Garros, when he lost to Nadal in the semifinals. Nadal won the title both years.

They're followed by the same men who were Nos. 3-6 before the French Open: David Nalbandian, Ivan Ljubicic, Andy Roddick and Nikolay Davydenko.

James Blake of the United States, who reached the French Open's third round for the first time, moved up one place to No. 7, tying his career high. Mario Ancic of Croatia rose three places to a career-best No. 9 thanks to his quarterfinal run.

Andre Agassi, off the tour since March but returning this week for grass-court play at the Queen's Club, moved from No. 23 to No. 21.

In the women's rankings, French Open runner-up Svetlana Kuznetsova rose four spots to No. 6.

Amelie Mauresmo and Kim Clijsters stayed at Nos. 1 and 2, followed by Henin-Hardenne, Maria Sharapova, and Nadia Petrova, who dropped from No. 3 after exiting Roland Garros in the first round.

Lindsay Davenport, who missed the French Open, remained at No. 7, followed by Elena Dementieva, Mary Pierce and Patty Schnyder.

Venus Williams moved up from No. 13 to No. 12 by reaching the quarterfinals. The player she lost to, 17-year-old Nicole Vaidisova, went from 16th to 13th, matching her highest ranking.
