Former UNM Lobo Dionna Marsh signs with Monarchs

It's not a surprising invite...as in tune with the UNM women's basketball program as Whiz is, I wouldn't have been surprised if he had drafted her. (This now to me makes the Piekarska pickup EXTREMELY interesting).

What job Marsh is competing for I'm not sure, she's athletic and wing-size, but doesn't have a full set of wing skills (no real perimeter game).

I'm not really sure who is battling for the "Kim Smith" seat with Kim Smith. The loser of the Franklin and Allen battle for Haynie's chair could be, but Frohlich is also still in the mix and she's got a three-point shot.

Then again, we need bodies in camp. Coach T had talked post-game Friday night about the fact that Laura Harper will be doing something with Team USA and she will miss the first couple fo weeks of camp as apparently will Kara for the same reason.

Should be interesting...

So who is battling who for what.

The Post competition is fairly clear, yet the wing competition is intriging to me.

Allen IMO is not necessarily battling for the back up point, but a wing position as well. This group does a variety of things and while the make-up of this team is similar, I think the process of how they do business will change.

Whiz said there are 3 seats open, however It would give me great joy if every spot on the roster was open. In theroy there are only 2 or 3 spots that are given. The rest are interchangeable and therefore should be up for grabs.

So what is the "Depth Chat" of this Monarchs Squad?

Frohlich has been playing overseas in Italy on the same team with Brunson. She has been putting up solid points, plus playing with Bekka. This has to be a plus for her and her possibilities with the Monarchs. Bekka has been a scoring & rebounding MONSTER (many double-doubles with very high scoring)! They are heading into the Italian semi-finals later this week in a best-of-three series. If they continue winning, I do not expect to see them before the end of the month or early May at best.

Harper & Lawson are playing in a pre-Olympics tournament from April 19-25 in Beijing, China. So we will not see either of them before the end of the month either.

Not sure if DeMya, Powell, and all the others are still playing overseas...right now it is looking like it might be the Ticha P and rookies show when camp starts. So yes, I think we do need bodies in camp, but I hope most of these "stick" with the Monarchs. I think each of them brings something we can use on our "team". I am especially interested in seeing Piekarska. She is the only one who's game I have not seen, and I like what Luv13 has posted on her so far.

I think Piekarska unless something unfortunate happens like she just decides to check out and not play at all during her time in camp is as close to a lock as any of the rookies coming in can be. I could have TOTALLY seen Whiz drafting Marsh and inviting Piekarska, not the other way around. I 'spose you could argue that the low third rounders are essentially invitees anyway, but still.

I don't know if Atkinson's Israeli team is done, but she's been having a nice season over there and rivalling Brunson in freakshow numbers. Atkinson had a game where she went 20/20, and I believe a game where she scored over 30 sprinkled in with other solid performances.

I think we're going to be ok..

Den-Den, are Parker, Fowles, Paris et al also part of the post group they're taking to Beijing?

Training Camp Roster:

PG:Ticha/Franklin/Kara
SG:Chelsea/Kara/Scholanda/Allen
SF:powell/Atkinson/Smith
PF:Walker/Harper/Marsh/Frolich
C:Brunson/Williams/Piekarska

My Final Roster:

PG:Ticha/Franklin
SG:Chelsea/Kara/Scholanda
SF:powell/Atkinson
PF:Walker/Harper
C:Brunson/Williams

IR: Frolich/Smith or Allen

Would like to see Piekarska stick, but I think it's either her or Frolich. And i know that people aren't too high on Adrian, but I think she can play 10 to 15 minutes a game and be solid.

Not People... I think it is just me.

Don't get me wrong I think she gave us some minutes last year. But was a poor 2 year investment at 70k+ a year. My only real issue with her is that she was soft. Plus she got beat way too much. A big chunk of our toughness packed up and went to Seattle. Centers need to be tough body, shot changing/blocking space eating intimadators in the paint. And A-Dub bless her heart is non of the Above.

If it is Close, I dump A-Dub's Salary and go with the Rookie. But I doubt Jenny would. Iza would probably have to totally out play Dub.

I think Franklin May be the IR spot. Something tells me Kara will log the majority of minutes as the back Up 1.

As for Smitty, Unless she is significantly and I mean Really significantly better she should be gone on General Principle. Allen should be more than suffiecent replacement.

I am not doing back flips, but I like the infusion of new blood. I still would like to see more competition in camp. I mean serious challenges but this group should be interesting to see at the open practice.

This is the list that I have seen for the tournament that starts this weekend:
Langhorne, Harper, Wiggins, Fowles, Harding, Swin Cash, Kara Lawson, Lisa Leslie, Courtney Paris, Katie Smith, and Lindsay Whalen.

No Parker...several others still playing overseas including Brunson. My understanding is that there is an active pre-Olympic roster of 30 that they are rotating at different tournaments, looking at who will fit best together.

Here is my guess based on who I know (because I know nothing about Piekarska and Marsh:

PG: Ticha/Franklin
SG: Newton/Lawson
C: Brunson/Williams
PF: Walker/Harper
SF: Powell/Robinson
Utility: Atkinson

That is somewhat a small team, but that's not a bad team that should compete for a playoff spot. What happens after that.......

Having seen Piekarska, it's not going to come down to her and AW this year, next year or the year after that may be a different story. If she were THAT pro-ready now, she wouldn't have been available that low in the draft and she would have been at draft camp as deep in post players as this draft was.

The fact that she wasn't at draft camp I think puts her @ a disadvantage, the coaches didn't have an opportunity to work her. Where she now gets an advantage is that we will have maybe two other tall people in camp until folks either come back from Europe or China.

I still think she'd have to monumentally fail in camp not to crack the 13 player roster. I'll give Whiz a ton of credit for having her on his radar screen in the first place since it appears she and Natasha Lacy were on his scouting visit list when Arrington reported she had to reach him by phone while he was Texas for a story in February. He must see how she can fit and what tools she has to work with. Where I ran into Boucek, I think she has had a chance to see that too in person.

At first I was going to ask why Parker is sitting this out, then I remembered why she might not be able to play (duh). That's an interesting group out of that 30 they're taking tho...
