Former Portland Trail Blazers Head Coach Terry Stotts is expected to draw interest from NBA teams after taking a year off following his dismissal in the spring of 2021. Stotts took the Blazers to the NBA playoffs in eight consecutive seasons between 2013 and 2021, amassing a 402-318 regular-season record in the process. Now NBA analyst Marc Stein is tabbing Stotts as a likely candidate for the Sacramento Kings head coaching position, should interim coach Alvin Gentry not be retained.

I don’t know much about him other than his record seems good and he has lots of experience. What makes him not a good choice for kings?

the other reported early candidates are Mike Brown (replaced Luke as the defense coordinator for the Warriors, whatever the hell that’s worth), D’Antoni (probably a year too late on that one now that we traded Haliburton for Sabonis), and Steve Clifford (not exactly the greatest coach but would at least get our guys to try on defense and Davion would probably turn into an All-Star under him).

If the middle manager gets his pick, it’ll be who he knows best. D’Antoni.
If Vivek makes the pick, it’ll be Doug. Because Vivek loves former players. Probably would get it right this time too.
If Matina makes the pick, it’ll be Hammond. Win or lose, Matina makes history.
Who the hell is Hammond?

I was all for D'Antoni at one point, but I'm not so sure anymore. I think he could have made the mismatch ball work a lot better but they've kind of switched back the other way now. Out of the candidates I think he's the best bet to make Fox/Sabonis the most efficient pick and roll combo in the NBA though.

So far, this might be the best way to get Christie/Bobby to look like safer bet choices, haha.

Clifford was a good coach in the two seasons he didn’t have massively uninspiring rosters. His record’s also sorta skewed because the Magic made him tank for the last year of his time with them. That said, I’m not sure a van Gundy disciple is a good coaching candidate in this day-in-age (even if Mike Malone technically was one too)

At this point my money’s on Mike Brown. On our two year plan we need to build a strong offense going to the basket with Fox and Sabonis, everything else needs to be about defense. Can’t imagine the FO would add all the defensive pieces to the roster and not try to upgrade coaching there as well

O no here we go again it's the coaches fault......we need another season of Fox and Ox and a different coach to the one after Gentry now.

Oh, I know who Becky Hammon is, and I also know that she has a head coaching job, that she starts next week. I didn't know who "Hammond" was, and I didn't feel the need to assume that you had simply spelled her name wrong; I thought that maybe you were working with some inside information.

The Kings haven’t had the best track record with background checks on their new coaching hires, so if they do offer Hammon the job, maybe they won’t call the Spurs.

When it comes to Stotts, is it at all possible that the front office just couldnt get him anybody else other than Dame and CJ? Like could it be Stotts got the most out of that team in spite of only having those two for major talent? Portland has a hard time getting free agents just like us. Not saying this is the case, just more of a question.

Stotts, D'Antoni, Clifford. Yikes. If those are truly some of the candidates that will be going through the interview process, then the hamster wheel will only continue

That's a pretty sexist thing to say, unless you have some specific backup on Matina saying she wants Hammon as the coach. I certainly haven't heard anything about that.

You do realize Hammon just signed a contract to coach the Las Vegas Aces, right? She won't be with the Spurs after this season. Why would the Kings contact the Spurs at all?

Hammon wouldn't touch the Kings job with a ten foot pole. I don't have any inside info but I'm guessing she got word that Pop might be sticking around through the rebuild and decided to fly. Taking a job like Blazers or Kings she'd be run out of town, the Spurs was always the smart play and if that wasn't an option becoming the top WNBA coach was the logical move.

I'd be on board with Atkinson or Slab's AV, or perhaps my top choice would be the younger Adelman.

It's not an inspiring list and am hoping they find someone different. The Athletics 40 under 40 have a few assistant coaching names that have been close to getting head coaching roles: Will Hardy, Charles Lee, Eric Khoury, Sergi Oliva, Will Weaver, and Kristi Toliver. Don't know much about them apart from Will Weaver, who coached the Sydney Kings maybe a season ago and did well.

Seems having the first women’s coach would be a natural evolution:
