Final Roster Predictions

#1
Anyone ready to give a guess? Here's mine:

Ticha
Kara
Bekka
Nicole
Adrian

Chelsea
Tangie
Aqua
Charel
Iza
Kim
Laura
Sho

I'm guessing that Dionne Marsh and Linda Frohlich will be the final cuts. Adrian, Iza and Laura seem to be putting up decent numbers together. Each plays a little differently, and brings some interesting options to the table--especially that lovely 3-pt shot of Iza's. :)

That leaves only DeMya. I have read several interpretations of the CBA on this, one in particular that is especially interesting. Theory is that since DeMya never reported to camp, and would not be able to pass a physical to play, that she would not be in the 13 roster spots. Monarchs would still have rights to her. Big question around this is that she was cored by Whiz. Would that effect this? Would that mean that we would not be able to core her next year? It seems if we were able to keep rights to her, that would work best for this year's roster, not sure about next year.

Anyone have other clarifications on this?

Predictions?

If the Monarchs can exclude DeMya from the roster and retain her rights, I think you're really close.

The final one or two (depending on the ruling on DeMya) spots are a toss up between Charel, Linda and Kim. I think MBF said in another thread that Linda is probably kicking herself for not getting into camp earlier this year, and I have to agree. Kim looks stronger and more confident this year, and Charel has had one very good and another reasonably good preseason game.

I'm imagining that the Monarchs won't make any cuts until May 15 or 16. They'll get more time to evaluate everyone and figure out rotations that way.

I actually think they'll retain Kim first, because she's a known commodity. With a rookie, they can have a fantastic camp and then fade off under the intensity of the season. I don't think there's much of a way to predict that, either. After Kim, it's going to depend on what Linda brings during practice sessions, but I think they might just go with someone they have an opportunity to develop. Either way, once Scho's off the IR, this person will be on the inactive list the majority of the season. That might be a good place to develop a young player.

GO MONARCHS!!!

My prediction is that there are going to be some interesting bigs on the waiver wire, so we're nowhere near set. I wouldn't be surprised if a few of the players who make the opening day roster aren't still in Sacto by mid-July. We've had a fairly noncompetitive training camp compared to our peers.

I would be surprised if Whiz picks up anyone out there on the waiver wire. Most who will be cut would have been available to him during the draft, and he picked who he has now. Also, it takes a good amount of time to learn Monarchs defense, so I don't see him taking anyone out there unless it's a big surprise--or Yo. Okay, so we can still dream.;)

Meh. The defense is tough, but there will be a handful of players on the team this year who can't play it (including some vets). If we don't use the waiver wire, it won't be because the players on the wire can't learn our defense.

One of the more recent ones is former Stanford Cardinal Kristin Newlin, who was waived by the PHX Mercury earlier this week.

On the RebKell board, someone had wondered why Newlin would sign up with PHX, when they had so many other big gals. My only guess is that when a team wins a championship, it tends to draw more attention from the non-drafted hopefuls.

I would love to see Whiz take a chance with Newlin, but I doubt it will happen.

Also, I see that Sarah Jo-Lawrence was waived by the Washington Mystics. And that the N.Y. Liberty has just acquired Leilani Mitchell from the Mercury for a third-round pick in next year's draft.

I could see them looking at the waiver wire, I think the prospect of running with rookies behind Williams-Strong and Brunson isn't the ideal scenario. I also agree that ability to work within the defensive scheme won't be the first consideration. $$$ however could be.

Point Guards - Ticha, Franklin
Shooting Guards - Lawson, Newton, Robinson
Small Forwards - Powell, Atkinson, Allen
Center - Williams, Harper
Power Forwards - Brunson

Reserves - Kim Smith, Frolich

To me the last active spot comes down to Linda Frolich and Charel Allen. and though there is a need for another big player, I think Allen's game is way too juicy and too tempting to leave inactive on the sidelines. I want to give her a shot to see if she is the real deal, and if she is not then go to Frolich.
