Kelvin Cato now wears #13 for the Magic and although it's not uncommon for a new player to request a player to give up his number for him, DC is not the type of guy that would do that especially being the new kid on the block with a team that was openly upset about the trade to begin with.

A quote I found during an interview when Doug played in Toronto..

David: Growing up, who were your basketball role models?

Doug Christie: My biggest one was Magic Johnson. But my first ones were between Dr. J and George Gervin. As I got older, I learned to appreciate Larry Bird's game. And of course, everyone wanted to be like Michael Jordan. But Magic would be the first and foremost. He was a big guard that liked to handle the ball. Even in high school when I was playing center, the coach had me bringing the ball up the court. So I tried to put all of those guys into my game. But I always wanted to be the Magic Man.

Doug's new nickname = The Magic Man or The Magic One

Magic jersey #1 used to be Penny Hardaway. Maybe since Doug shares similar qualities to him, he saw fit wearing his old jersey #. Just my guess.
