Celtic party

Looking to get a big name to attend the party and more:

"According to league sources, the Celts are willing to let Philadelphia complete its check of the marketplace before making a final offer. And with the 76ers possibly needing to wait until the July 12 start of the free agent signing period (in case one of the returning players must be part of a sign-and-trade) to facilitate a multiteam deal, there appears to be some time to work things out." Boston Herald

"The Celtics also are said to have varying degrees of interest in New Jersey’s Richard Jefferson, Seattle’s Rashard Lewis, Indiana’s Jermaine O’Neal and Phoenix’ Shawn Marion. But sources weren’t so sure the Nets would part with Jefferson, and O’Neal is said to be on the lower end of the Celts’ wish list." Boston Herald

"Ainge has gone about assembling his summer league team with the closeted glee of a fantasy league geek. And beyond the expected presence of players like Sebastian Telfair and the just-drafted Rajon Rondo when the team heads for Las Vegas, Ainge believes he may also have bagged one of the summer’s top non-drafted free agents - Allan Ray." Boston Herald

"With two new point guards (Telfair, Rondo) on the scene, Orien Greene’s time as a Celtic appears to be over, although Ainge said yesterday the team hasn’t made a decision on the second-year playmaker." Boston Herald

"It should be generally accepted that there will be at least some basketball questions to be answered if Allen Iverson ever finds his way into a Celtic uniform. When such major elements as Iverson and Paul Pierce are poured into the same beaker, the resultant chemical reaction cannot always be predicted with ultimate certainty. But let’s wait a few paragraphs to ponder that. Let’s deal directly with the definite. The franchise will get at least one of its wishes. As an executive put it late Wednesday night, “Relevance.” Boston Herald

"The Celtics do have concerns about Iverson away from the floor -- whether he will hinder the needs of a young and developing team with his distaste for practice. (The best player in franchise history wasn’t too crazy about the off-day sessions either, but Bill Russell was a man among veterans.) Some around the club wonder if Iverson will make too much non-basketball news." Boston Herald

"The critical aspect to consider here is that neither Pierce nor Iverson has ever played with anyone as good as the other. Pierce probably deferred too much to Antoine Walker at times, and word is strong that he would love the opportunity to run more freely with Iverson sharing the attention of the defense. According to a source, Iverson is talking as if he expects Atlanta is his more likely destination, but he, in return, has let it be known he’d appreciate playing with Pierce." Boston Herald

"The Boston Herald insists the Celtics remain in the hunt for Allen Iverson. Reports of a three-team trade (concocted by Boston boss Danny Ainge, I'm told, under pressure to get something done because of soaring ticket prices) were rampant leading up to the draft. Boston was prepared to send Al Jefferson, Gerald Green and No. 7 to Philly for Iverson and relocate Wally Szczerbiak in Utah, which was expected to drop off Carlos Boozer at Philly's doorstep. According to sources, the Jazz refused to play along." New York Post

Pierce was on QF with SAS night before the draft, and was talking a lot with SAS about wanting a big name... looks like Ainge is responding even more by going after guys.

What a great way to sum up Danny Ainge's post-playing career...
